It's an old cliche, but it fits. A win is a win. But boy, it was a TOUGH win. ANd this is one tough friggin' team.

Williams and Fudd hit their free throws, UCF missed a couple and UConn held on to win to move into the Sweet Sixteen. They will meet 3 seed Indiana in what should be a great game.

Yeah, my 20 point prediction was way off. I should have known how low scoring this game would be.

I'll put together a full post game report and then eventually a full pre-game report for the Indiana game.

I'll sleep good tonight. I how those UConn warriors get some zzzzz's too! They deserve it.

I really tried , but I just couldn't get the words out for any other games. Maybe in the next blog. There were some good ones.

Scoreless stretches

The theme for this year’s tournament seems to be upsets, which speaks to parity. However, while possible I am biased because I just started noticing it, it seems to be the number of scoreless stretches seems unusually high this year. I associate scoreless stretches with mismatches which seems inconsistent with parity, but maybe something else is going on.

Some scoreless stretches are easy to find. Montana State’s goose egg in the first quarter sticks out doubly, because score stretches at the beginning of the game are glaringly obvious, and a zero in the box score for the quarter sticks out like a sore thumb. UConn caused one of those against Mercer in the third quarter.

But there have been many other extended scoreless stretches. Baylor’s first point team after 7:02 in the first quarter. I won’t be surprised if that’s the latest they scored in history. I hope the fans don’t stand until the first point.

FGCU was up 39-38 with 3:14 left in the second quarter and didn’t score again until 7:06 in the third when they cut a 16 point deficit to 14. That’s almost 6 minutes without a point.

George’s first point against Iowa State came after they were down zero – 11 almost five minutes into the game.

Miami went almost 8 minutes between points. They have three with 3:17 in the first quarter and didn’t score again until 5:08 in the second.

Louisville started the game with a 14 – 0 run against Gonzaga, then Gonzaga responded with a 12 – 0 run of their own.

One of the more unusual stretches was in the Stanford-Kansas game. The game was surprisingly close, with Stanford leading by only three points well into the third quarter. They were still within 12 points with 2:08 left in the third quarter when Stanford started a 24 – zero run that only ended with 5:05 left in the fourth when Kansas hit a free throw. A 56 – 46 game turned into an 80 – 46 rout.

That’s an incomplete list of long runs and I’m not even looking for runs like 44 – 2 (South Carolina versus Howard)

What’s going on? Is it lockdown defense?

Or am I a victim of the Baader–Meinhof phenomenon?
