GO UCONN!!!!!

No, it's not my wedding anniversary. I'm not sure who celebrates their first date, but my wife and I do. It was January 15th 1972, the day before the Superbowl. It was Cowboys against the Dolphins in Superbowl VI. Yes, it was only the 6th Superbowl. This year will be our 52nd year of our first date. A blind date at that.

So Happy Anniversary to my lovely wife!!!

And against the toughest schedule in the country

Straight from the Dog

Well, that was an interesting week in the Top 25!! And it all benefits the Huskies. Let's take a look!

Saturday

No. 4 Baylor lost to unranked Iowa State and unranked Kansas
No. 10 Texas lost to No. 12 Kansas State
No. 14 Indiana lost to No. 3 Iowa by 27

Sunday

No. 2 UCLA lost to No. 9 USC
No. 7 LSU lost to Auburn
No. 8 Stanford lost to No. 5 Colorada
No. 11 Virginia Tech lost to No. 21 Florida State

That's 2, 4 (2 times), 7, 8, 10, 11 and 14.

With UConn at No. 13 winning big and No. 12 Kansas State beating No. 10 Texas, here is how I would rank the top 15.

1 South Carolina
2 Iowa
3 Colorado
4 NC STate
5 USC
6 UCLA
7 Kansas State
8 UConn
9 Texas
10 Stanford
11 LSU
12 Louisville
13 Virginia Tech
14 Gonzaga
15 Ohio State

I'm really not good at this so we shall see how close I am.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, this should help recruiting...lol. Finally on ESPN and on a 6 game winning streak, Tennessee was manhandled by unranked Texas A&M, losing to the Aggies 71-56.

The Lady Vols were once again down double digits in the first half but this time they had no answer. It's really not surprising as the six game winning streak was against 3 weak OOC opponents and weaker SEC teams (although I'm not so sure about Auburn).

During those 6 games, Tennessee fans were actually talking about returning to national condender status. I would be that conversation ends today. They were ready to coronate Coach Harper after ready to fire her.

Their "first team all-american" Rickea Jackson, according to their fans, was 5-15 from the field, didn't get the the foul line and had ONE rebounds. They had annointed sophomore guard Wynn as a soon to be superstar. She had 2 points on 1-4 shooting, 1 rebound and zero assists. Those fans have had delutions of grandeur for many years. I think this year it's been the worst.

Another tough battle for the Lady Vols against Mississippi State on the Bulldog's home court. Will the Lady Vols be able to win enough to get in the NCAA Tournament? I have my doubts after watching them today.

I'm going to take a trip over to Volnation.com and have a few laughs.

Game Highlights - Tennessee style
They didn't miss once and lost by 15 points

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Let me pick on another SEC team. No. 7 LSU lost to unranked Auburn 67-62. Nothing, well except a Tennessee loss, makes me happier than Angel Reese losing. And to have her turn the ball over with LSU down two and nine seconds left was just glorious. She is so arrogant on the court. You can just feel her looking down at the other players, including her teammates.

You can see in the video that she played it like she was a guard. And everyone on her team just watched her dribble. A terrible play. I'm not a coach but maybe a guard should dribble while Reese posts up and then get her the ball? Maybe Kim Mulkey's fault?

Lots of talk about LSU repeating as champs before the season started and they lost their first game of the season to Colorado. They went on a 16 game winning streak against Kim's traditionally weak schedule. And now, getting into the meat of the SEC schedule, they can't just coast to a win with talent.

They are really missing Smith, who gave them a terrific rebounder and great minutes eater. In this game they had to play Reese 37 minutes, Morrow 39 minutes and Williams 39 minutes. It was clear that they were fatigued. The freshman Williams is really seeing what conference play is all about. She was 3-10 from the field and 0-1 on threes for  7 points.

Van Lith was supposed to be the answer at point guard but it's clear that is not her position. She was 1-9 from the field, and had only 1 assist and 3 turnovers. The WNBA is not calling.

One more crack from me. The superbig freshman 6'6" Del Rosario only played 4 minutes. Hey she did grab a rebound.

I'll predict this right now. They will not repeat.

SPIDER STATS

Plus one for every assist block point rebound and steal. I don’t add extra for offensive rebounds as it already seems to favor the bigs. Minus one for every missed shot (2, 3 or foul), turnover or foul committed.

UConn 113, St. John’s 14.

Tamika said jubilation, this team says domination!

Net positives/minutes played: Paige 31/25, Aaliyah 21/26, Nika 17/29, Ashlynn 15/35, Qadence 9/15, Ice 9/24, Ines 7/12, KK 5/27, Amari -4/7.

Paige all-world; Ines +7 without taking a shot! Ice improves, hurt by 6 turnovers; Q showing some Aubrey moves.

At halftime Megan commented on Nika’s defense on the red storm star, so in the second half I watched Nika on defense instead of the ball. Her player couldn’t even touch the ball, Nika was on her like Elmer’s glue.

Final four in Cleveland. To paraphrase the late great Robbie Robertson again: Look out Cleveland, Huskies coming through, and we’re running right up on youuuuu.

  1. First meet: Dec. 11, Friday, in 1981 at 43 W. 16th St., Apt. 8-B at around 11:30PM. I knew the host from grad school, my wife knew him from college. I can rattle this off, and unsurprisingly women are impressed and guys look at me like "so do you also know the Yankees lineup from 1978 in the Fenway Playoff game?". Helps when you marry and when your two grandfathers had semi-photographic memories.
