Straight from the Dog

Tennessee beat Vanderbilt. That is all.

------------------------------------------------------------------

I focued on these three Top 25 matchups Sunday.

"No. 2 Iowa takes on a tough defensive team in No. 18 Ohio State on the floor of the Buckeyes. Can OSU take Clark off of her game? No one has been able to do that so far this season. I'm guess they can't do that but maybe they hold the rest of the team down and pull off the upset."

That is exactly what they did. Clark had 45 points but it was not enough. Iowa was up 7 points going into the fourth quarter and expanded it to 12 points. However, Ohio State outscored them 25-13 over the last 9 minutes of the quarter to tie the game at 83-83 and send it into overtime. OSU continued their roll winning the overtime 17-9 for the 100-92 win. Clark took 25 shots and 18 of them were three pointers. But the Hawkeyes' issue is defense. It's been that way for years. It will be their season ending issue in the tournament.

Clark got run into by a Buckeyefan when they stormed the court and knock down. She was ok but certainly a scarey situation.

I'd call is a charge on Clark.
Maybe look where you are going?

Game Highlights

"No. 13 Louisville and No. 23 North Carolina face off in a tough ACC matchup. Can UNC hold on to their Top 25 position? At home? Maybe. But I just feel that Louisville will win this one."

I should have gone with my first instinct. UNC handled Louisville in the third quarter to gake an 11 point lead that they held on to until the final buzzer winning 79-68.

Game Highlights

"Man, the PAC12 is tough. No. 6 USC, fresh off a loss to No. 20 Utah now has to travel to Colorado to take on the No. 3 Buffalos who just lost to No. 5 UCLA. Wow. Which team will bounce back for the win and maybe stay where they are in the poll? We shall see. I'm betting on Colorado at home."

Nailed this one. It was a really good game, lots of back and forth. But the home team pulled it out and Colorado won this game 63-59. This should knock USC out of the top ten and move the Huskies up a spot to No. 8.

I was going to do a write up on the AP poll and then Phil sent me a write up for the blog. He did a great job explaining it so I don't have to. Thanks Phil.

AP voting

The AP voters will have their work cut out for them on Monday 22 January.

It starts off easy enough, South Carolina’s number one and they won easily.

And it gets a little trickier.

Number two Iowa lost to Ohio State, so they obviously have to move down but how far? Just behind them is Colorado who had a nice win over number six USC, but they also lost to UCLA. A loss to UCLA is hardly a bad loss but it’s a loss. Can we really reward Colorado by moving them up after a loss?

Let’s set that aside for a second. Surely, we can move NC State ahead of Iowa? No, they lost to Miami they’ve got to be moving down.

Luckily, the next team is UCLA. They were punished for the loss to USC but now with the win over Colorado can be moved back up into second.

So maybe we can move UCLA to second and Iowa down to third. However, let’s remember when UCLA lost to a top 10 team USC, they were moved down three spots. Was I really saying that a loss to a top 10 team moves a team down three spots, but a loss to the number 18 team will only cost them one spot? That hardly sounds fair, but it doesn’t make sense to move Iowa down past NC State or Colorado.

Can’t exactly move them past USC who is coming off back-to-back losses.

If we really want to move Iowa down more than one spot we’ve got to look at the possibility of moving Kansas State ahead of them. On the surface it sounds ludicrous. Iowa has beaten Kansas State. Kansas State has beaten Iowa. If we treat those two as a wash, Kansas State has no other losses and Iowa does have another loss so it makes sense but it still doesn’t feel right. Nobody really thinks Kansas State deserves to be ranked behind Iowa.

Sigh....

The right thing to do is move UConn up and Iowa just behind them but that’s not gonna happen.

I guess I’m glad I’m not an AP writer with the responsibility for sending in a ballot it’s much easier to criticize.

Milestone watch

• Aaliyah Edwards reached 1516 career points with her 18 points in the DePaul game. She reaches the1500 point milestone, passes Asjha Jones to move into 28th place, and needs 16 more points to tie Moriah Jefferson.

• Nika Mühl had 550 assists after her 7 assists in the DePaul game. That moved her past Maya Moore, Pam Webber and Kelly Faris to take sole possession of 8th place. She needs nine more to tie Bria Hartley.

• Geno Auriemma now has 1196 wins and needs four more to reach the 1200 plateau.

SPIDER STATS

Plus one for every assist block point rebound and steal. I don’t add extra for offensive rebounds as it already seems to favor the bigs. Minus one for every missed shot (2, 3 or foul), turnover or foul committed.

UConn 105, DePaul 9.

I have Covid-yuck.

Net positives/minutes played: Paige 28/23, Ashlynn 20/35, Aaliyah 19/21, Nika 13/21, Amari 12/11, Qadence 5/21, Ines 2/17, Ice 1/20, KK 1/31.

Paige all-world efficiency, Aaliyah 10-10 free throws, Ashlynn 7 rebounds, could Amari actually contribute?, Ice good stuff but 5 turnovers and 5 fouls. Nika national defensive player of the year?!
