Straight from the Dog

I wrote this on a UConn message board Monday.

Two Top 25 games , two possible upsets.

"No. 2 UCLA visits No. 16 Utah.  Utah's 6'2" forward Alissa Pili brings her inside/outside game to Lauren Betts's UCLA team. Utah has been playing some great ball, especially Pili. They beat a very good USC team in their last game. I believe she had 37 points. Will the No. 2 position in the poll jinx stay true and bite UCLA for the second time this season?"

Clearly the jinx won. UCLA lost to Utah in a great game to watch. The Utes were hot from the outside and needed to be as their leading scorer Pili struggled. They built a lead and held it for the entire game. Up nine points going into the fourth quarter and then up seven points with 5 minutes left. It was still a six point lead 70-64 with 2:48 remaining when UCLA scored the next 8 points to gake a 72-70 lead with 4 seconds left. The Bruins played some terrible defense as on the inbound play, Inse Viera for Utah drove unguarded to the basket to tie the game and send it into overtime. Wow! Utah dominated the overtime and ended up winning 94-81. So as quickly as UCLA moved into the 2 spot in the Poll,  they will quickly be moving out. Pili struggled but still ended up with 16 points. Kiki Rice, the UCLA star guard had EIGHT turnovers and several in the OT.

"The New No. 4 team, Kansas State takes on No. 13 Baylor in a Big 12 matchup. Kansas State leads the conference at 7-0 but they are missing their star center Ayoka Lee for this game and 4 weeks going forward. She had surgery on her fractured ankle. The senior from Minnesota is averaging 19.8 points, 8.2 rebounds and 2.7 blocked shots. She ranks second in the nation and leads the Big 12 in field-goal percentage, shooting a career-best .677. She will be missed in this game and games going forward for the Wildcats."

Another good game. Baylor dominated the first half taking a 9 point lead 39-30 into the locker room. Kansas State played tough and kept battling and Baylor struggled to score and K-State closed to 3 points at the end of the third quarter. Baylor had 15 turnovers at this point. Ugly. Wait, Kansas State had 17 turnovers. Really ugly. Not the best played game at this point.  Kansas State hit a quick three pointer to start the fourth quarter and to tie up the game. In the first minute of the fourth quarter the two teams had three turnovers. This game got really hard to watch. Halfway thru the fourth quarter Baylor had a one point lead 53-52. The announcers kept saying how good the defense has been for both team, but from my perspective, it was a lot of really bad offense. Bad passes everywhere.

K-State took the lead with 3:20 left in the game. The next minute was more turnovers and one really bad airball on the three by Baylor and it looked like both teams forgot how to score. The Wildcats hit a big basket to create a three point lead 58-55 with 1:30 left and Baylor just kept turning the ball over. It remained that score and Baylor had the ball with 10 seconds remaining.  They inbounded and with 9.8 seconds left the Baylor player shot the ball like the clock was running out. Really weird.

A great win for K-State to hold on to their No. 4 ranking and stay undefeated in the Big 12.

Baylor looks like they never played against a zone in their lives. They ended up with 20 turnovers, as did Kansas State. KSU shot 10-17 from the FT line. Baylor shot 9-17. Terrible basketball by both teams. The team that was less bad won.

I watched a few videos of this and for sure it looked like a flop. That is a real jerkish move. Who does that?

Milestone watch

• Aaliyah Edwards reached 1516 career points with her 18 points in the DePaul game. She reaches the1500 point milestone, passes Asjha Jones to move into 28th place, and needs 16 more points to tie Moriah Jefferson.

• Nika Mühl had 550 assists after her 7 assists in the DePaul game. That moved her past Maya Moore, Pam Webber and Kelly Faris to take sole possession of 8th place. She needs nine more to tie Bria Hartley.

• Geno Auriemma now has 1196 wins and needs four more to reach the 1200 plateau.

SPIDER STATS

Plus one for every assist block point rebound and steal. I don’t add extra for offensive rebounds as it already seems to favor the bigs. Minus one for every missed shot (2, 3 or foul), turnover or foul committed.

UConn 105, DePaul 9.

I have Covid-yuck.

Net positives/minutes played: Paige 28/23, Ashlynn 20/35, Aaliyah 19/21, Nika 13/21, Amari 12/11, Qadence 5/21, Ines 2/17, Ice 1/20, KK 1/31.

Paige all-world efficiency, Aaliyah 10-10 free throws, Ashlynn 7 rebounds, could Amari actually contribute?, Ice good stuff but 5 turnovers and 5 fouls. Nika national defensive player of the year?!
