Perspective!!!

If you read my Top 25 scores for Sunday, maybe, just maybe you might feel a little better about the UConn loss. It was upset city!!

If wasn't a big upset but No. 19 Virginia Tech beat No. 21 Syracuse 75-62 on the Orange home court. This after Syracuse beat Notre Dame earlier in the week.

No. 20 North Carolina lost to unranked Virgina 81-66. 

No. 16 Utah lost to No. 25 Oregon State. Not a big upset as it was on the Beavers' home court. But the margin? The score was 91-66. Wow.

No. 11 USC lost again, this time 72-69 at home to unranked Washington. 

The big upset of the day was No. 2 UCLA losing to unranked Washington State on the Bruins' home court 85-82. UCLA was down 17 points in this game but just couldn't come all the way back. After a 14-0 start, the Bruins are 2-3 in their last five.

It's important for fans to understand that their is a lot more parity in the women's game and ups"ets can happen if a team is not on their game as UConn wasn't against a talented Notre Dame team. The most important thing is for the losing team to learn from the loss.

My friend Cori made a great point about the UConn loss - "Nika fouled out with 9:29 to play in the game. Do you know what the score was? ND was up by 1 point, 60-59. It was a close game. ND blew it open only after Nika went out. If anyone doubts Nika's value to this team, that fact should say something. Whether her fouls were legitimate or phantom, as soon as she was out of the game the wheels fell off the UConn wagon and Notre Dame rolled away." 

And more from Cori - "When Nika picked up her third foul in the second quarter, with 4:06 left in the quarter, the score was tied. 32-32. After she came out, ND outscored UConn 12-3 to close the half with a lead of 9 points. As already noted, when Nika fouled out early in the fourth quarter, Notre Dame was up by 1 point. They went on to outscore UConn 22-8. With Nika out of the game due to fouls, Notre Dame outscored UConn 34-11."

And in the "misery loves company" mode,  my favorite team to lose, Tennessee, dropped a tough one on the road against Ole Miss. For only the third time in the last 30 seasons and the first time since 2017, Ole Miss beat Tennessee 80-75. That was very enjoyable to watch.

• Aaliyah Edwards reached 1549 career points with her 23 points in the Notre Dame game. She passed Moriah Jefferson, Cathy Bochain, and Jennifer Rizzotti. She needs three points to tie Wendy Davis in 24th place

• Aaliyah Edwards now has 856 rebounds with 11 against Notre Dame. She is in sole possession of 14th place, and needs 41 more to catch Olivia Nelson-Ododa

• Nika Mühl had 559 assists after her 3 assists in the Notre Dame game. She is in sole possession of 8th place. She is tied with Bria Hartley for 7th place.
• Geno Auriemma now has 1197 wins and needs three more to reach the 1200 plateau.

Plus one for every assist block point rebound and steal. I don’t add extra for offensive rebounds as it already seems to favor the bigs. Minus one for every missed shot (2, 3 or foul), turnover or foul committed.

Citron Nikaed Paige. Hidalgo spectacular, but look at Aaliyah’s numbers! Were we outcoached?

The ESPN play by play doesn’t show substitutions, but I bet we won during the time all five starters were playing together. Missed Aubrey tonight.

Silver lining of Covid: prevented me from being there. Looking forward to the rest of the season, with the exception of one game.
