GO UCONN!!!!!

Heading here on Sunday and I'll be back on Friday. I'm bringing the lap top but I don't know if I'll be able to blog as usual. We shall see.

I was only able to watch the first half. And it was a great half. The Huskies are playing terrific basketball. And even in the second quarter you can tell they weren't pressing like they did in the first quarter. From the box score it looks like Geno played the entire team double digit minutes and that is just awesome!!!

The scoring was spread out as well. Ashlynn Shade saw how well KK Arnold played in the previous game and said to her, "not so fast" in the race for BEFOW. She played a team high 35 minutes and scored 21 points on 8-19 shooting and 2-6 on threes. She even got to the free throw line making all three attempts. She added a career high 7 rebounds. She is so active! Geno said he players her a lot of minutes because he trusts her.

Paige was hot in the first quarter and ended up with 20 points in only 23 minutes. It was great to limit her minutes. More games like this will be important for the rigors of the NCAA tournament.

Aaliyah couldn't be stopped so DePaul just kept fouing her. She scored 18 points and went 10-10 foul line. All in the first half. Crazy.

KK played 31 minutes, second on the team, but seemed to take a back seat in this game. She only scored 2 points, handed out 2 assists and grabbed 3 rebounds.

Nika had her usual game. 6 points, 4 rebounds, 7 assists. But she showed her defensive bonefides in this game, clamping down on  leading scorer for DePaul Anaya Peoples. I don't know how many points she scored when Muhl was guarding her but she was 2-10 from the field and 4-5 from the foul line for 8 points. From what I saw in the first half, most of that scoring had to be after Nika was out of the game.

The bench was terrific in this game. Nothing specactular but they had 21 points, 15 rebounds and 4 assists.

I do remember one time where Ice Brady did not block out on a particular play. Geno took her out and let her know, as only Geno can, how to block out.

It was great to see that DeBerry scored 8 points and hit her only 2 free throws. She also grabbed 5 rounds and blocked a shot in her 11 minutes. And she didn't turn the ball over. A really nice appearance. Maybe she has earned some more minutes? I hope so.

Overall, the game went as expected. After all I predicted a 35+ point win. I always feel bad for Dough Bruno. A great guy and defender of Geno and the program. He appreciates greatness!

Up next is the rematch with Marquette, this time in the Al McGuire Center. It should be a more competative game. Here is the Pregame Report

Straight from the Dog

"Tennessee has 11 4-star/5-star players on its roster "

Yes, that wonderful Tennessee poster is at it again, talking up the Tennessee roster. It's just more whistling past the graveyard, as their lack of High School recruiting is still there.

Let's take a look at their roster and ESPN HS ratings. Not all 4/5 star players are the same.

F Rickea Jackson 5 5 star transfer
G Talaysia Cooper 18 5 star transfer
C Tamari Key 47 5 star
F Jillian Hollingshead 37 4 star transfer
G Sara Puckett 43 4 star
F Karoline Striplin 45 4 star
G Kaiya Wynn 62 4 star
G Jasmine Powell 76 4 star transfer
G Destinee Wells 81 4 star transfer
G Jewel Spear 82 4 star transfer
G Avery Strickland unranked by ESPN transfer
G Tess Darby unranked 3 star
G Ede Darby unranked by ESPN

This is what he is bragging about?

Their home grown recruits are ranked 43, 45, 47, 62, and two unranked players. The rest are transfers. Three of their four highest ranked players are transfers.

Someone needs to show him this. It totally explains why they are just a mediocre team in a mediocre conference.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Three Top 25 matchups Sunday.

No. 2 Iowa takes on a tough defensive team in No. 18 Ohio State on the floor of the Buckeyes. Can OSU take Clark off of her game? No one has been able to do that so far this season. I'm guess they can't do that but maybe they hold the rest of the team down and pull off the upset.

No. 13 Louisville and No. 23 North Carolina face off in a tough ACC matchup. Can UNC hold on to their Top 25 position? At home? Maybe. But I just feel that Louisville will win this one.

Man, the PAC12 is tough. No. 6 USC, fresh off a loss to No. 20 Utah now has to travel to Colorado to take on the No. 3 Buffalos who just lost to No. 5 UCLA. Wow. Which team will bounce back for the win and maybe stay where they are in the poll? We shall see. I'm betterin on Colorado at home.

Milestone watch

• Aaliyah Edwards reached 1516 career points with her 18 points in the DePaul game. She reaches the1500 point milestone, passes Asjha Jones to move into 28th place, and needs 16 more points to tie Moriah Jefferson.

• Nika Mühl had 550 assists after her 7 assists in the DePaul game. That moved her past Maya Moore, Pam Webber and Kelly Faris to take sole possession of 8th place. She needs nine more to tie Bria Hartley.

• Geno Auriemma now has 1196 wins and needs four more to reach the 1200 plateau.

SPIDER STATS

Plus one for every assist block point rebound and steal. I don’t add extra for offensive rebounds as it already seems to favor the bigs. Minus one for every missed shot (2, 3 or foul), turnover or foul committed.

UConn 105, DePaul 9.

I have Covid-yuck.

Net positives/minutes played: Paige 28/23, Ashlynn 20/35, Aaliyah 19/21, Nika 13/21, Amari 12/11, Qadence 5/21, Ines 2/17, Ice 1/20, KK 1/31.

Paige all-world efficiency, Aaliyah 10-10 free throws, Ashlynn 7 rebounds, could Amari actually contribute?, Ice good stuff but 5 turnovers and 5 fouls. Nika national defensive player of the year?!
