Straight from the Dog
From a South Carolina fan posting on a Tennessee board - "Sarah (Strong) needs to think hard about UCONN. They have way too many players get injured at the start of the season and then have to sit out for the whole year, just to do a repeat with the same players a year later. There is something wrong when you lose that many players consistently. If that continues, she'll spend most of her time at UCONN rehabbing....just saying...."
A friend of mine and a great UConn supporter thinks that it's the trainer at UConn causing the injuries. Facts don't support that theory, but surprised to hear that from a UConn fans. It does what this South Carolina fan is trying to do, diswayed a player from coming to UConn due to fear of injury.
Now, I don't think any player is worried about that. But still, it's a dumb argument.

Shooting efficiency
It has been observed by some that her high-scoring games often include many attempts, while Paige often scores almost as many points with far fewer attempts.
I thought it would be interesting to try to look at this a little bit more formally.
There is a stat called true shooting percentage. It makes the obvious adjustment that hitting a three is more valuable than hitting a two. It also makes an adjustment for free throws that’s not quite as obvious.
The formula is:
points divided by 2 ( FGA plus (0.44 x FTA))
(The factor of 0.44 reflects the fact that there are some free-throw attempts not associated with field-goal attempts such as technical fouls. Someone in the NBA looked at aggregate stats for the season and came up with this factor. I haven’t looked into it but as long as I use the same factor for everybody it should come up with a single metric that will be higher for more efficient players and lower for less efficient players.)
My analysis started with all the games this year in which a player scored 40 or more points. That happened 18 times.
I also selected three of Paige’s games.
The following table has the data for all of these games sorted by true shooting percentage.
As you can see from this table Mikaylah Williams had an incredible game against Kent State with a 91% true shooting percentage.
In an interesting coincidence, the second-best entry on the list is also against Kent State, where Sophia Wiard of Toledo had an 86.4% true shooting percentage.
Paige comes in at third on this list (please note I’m not suggesting she had the third-best true shooting percentage in the country this year there almost certainly are players who hit all of their shots in some game which will give a higher percentage).
Paige went 11 for 15 from the field hitting all of her free throws for a true shooting percentage of 85.7%.
Note that her second-best game, the game against Seton Hall and her third-best game the game against DePaul all had higher true shooting percentages than any of Caitlin Clark’s games.
It’s also notable that Caitlin Clark’s best game in this list isn’t even the best game for an Iowa player. Hannah Stuelke had an impressive game against Penn State hitting 17 for 20 from the field, resulting in a true shooting percentage of 80.4%.
This is not to disparage Clark’s impressive abilities, just to put it in perspective. She scores a ton of points, but she takes a lot of shots to get those points.
It’s not even obvious that a higher true shooting percentage is always better. If someone goes five for five, scores 10 points and has a true shooting percentage of 100%, that’s pretty darn good but not better than someone who scores 30 points while taking more shots.
It’s also interesting to note Juju Watkins in 10th and 11th place on this list. Both of those not quite as good in terms of true shooting percentage as Paige’s best two games but better than all four of Clark’s games.

Milestone Watch
• Aaliyah Edwards now has 966 rebounds with 11 against Villanova. She now needs 41 to catch Gabby Williams in 8th place.
• Nika Mühl had 618 assists after her 6 assists in the Villanova game. She is in 5th place and needs 14 more to tie Renee Montgomery.
• Geno now has 1205 wins.
Plus one for every assist block point rebound and steal. I don’t add extra for offensive rebounds as it already seems to favor the bigs. Minus one for every missed shot (2, 3 or foul), turnover or foul committed.
UConn 72, Villanova 20.
Net positives/minutes played: Paige 27/34, Aaliyah 15/39, KK 10/40, Qadence 6/13, Nika 4/28, Ashlynn 2/40, Ines 0/1, Ice 0/5.
Harrowing drive home in the downpour from Storrs to Hartford.
Isn’t Paige awesome? Villanova cut it to seven, UConn calls time out, Bill says only two players should shoot for UConn (meaning Paige and Aaliyah). What happens? Field goal Nika, two foul shots Paige, field goal Nika, 3 pointer Ashlynn assisted by KK. Guess we got a team.
Aaliyah was clobbered right in front of us and knocked into the table-ridiculous no call.
Game highlight: KK dancing in the stands with the students. Irrepressible!
Go UConn, fry the friars!
