UConn incoming freshman Morgan Cheli returned Saturday from a leg injury that had her miss several games. Coming off the bench, she had 19 points and 5 rebounds.
Folsom (26-6) opened the second half on a 15-8 run before Cheli got hot to stop the charge. The visitors made another run in the fourth quarter, cutting the margin to 72-66 with just under four minutes to play.
Cheli again put a stop to the rally, her 3-pointer stretching the lead back to nine.
Mitty wanted to keep Cheli’s minutes in the low 20s. But she exceeded that number because, well, she was needed.
Phillips was asked what her star showed in her return.
“Besides lights-out shooting, she brings a level of confidence to our group, some composure, the leadership,” Phillips said. “Understands our schemes, the other team, what they’re trying to take away. She’ll look to exploit that. Recognizes our team’s set of strengths and gets people the basketball where they can score and be at their best.”

Straight from the Dog
Caitlin Clark eclipsed the scoring mark set by Pete Maravich to become the all time leading scoring in all of basketball history - men or women.
She beat his 54 year old records by scoring 35 points against No. 2 Ohio State in No. 6 Iowa's big win. And she did it in front of Maya Moore, her childhood idol.

Pete was one of my favorite players. His floppy sox and thin as a reed body were his calling cards. If they had a 3 point line and let freshman play in his era, he would still have the record.
That being said, congrats to Caitlin. An amazing players!!

On Thursday the second release of the rankings for the NCAA tournament was, well, released.
And coming in at No. 5, the top two seed was Virginia Tech. Boy did that get screwed up. The Hokies lost that very same night and then on Sunday, they lost AGAIN. I mentioned that I thought they were overrated and overranked. So what will happen? I'd bet in the AP poll where they were No. 5, they drop out of the Top Ten. And how will they be in SECreme's bracketology? I'd bet now a low 3 seed or a high 4 seed. We shall see.

Shooting efficiency
It has been observed by some that her high-scoring games often include many attempts, while Paige often scores almost as many points with far fewer attempts.
I thought it would be interesting to try to look at this a little bit more formally.
There is a stat called true shooting percentage. It makes the obvious adjustment that hitting a three is more valuable than hitting a two. It also makes an adjustment for free throws that’s not quite as obvious.
The formula is:
points divided by 2 ( FGA plus (0.44 x FTA))
(The factor of 0.44 reflects the fact that there are some free-throw attempts not associated with field-goal attempts such as technical fouls. Someone in the NBA looked at aggregate stats for the season and came up with this factor. I haven’t looked into it but as long as I use the same factor for everybody it should come up with a single metric that will be higher for more efficient players and lower for less efficient players.)
My analysis started with all the games this year in which a player scored 40 or more points. That happened 18 times.
I also selected three of Paige’s games.
The following table has the data for all of these games sorted by true shooting percentage.
As you can see from this table Mikaylah Williams had an incredible game against Kent State with a 91% true shooting percentage.
In an interesting coincidence, the second-best entry on the list is also against Kent State, where Sophia Wiard of Toledo had an 86.4% true shooting percentage.
Paige comes in at third on this list (please note I’m not suggesting she had the third-best true shooting percentage in the country this year there almost certainly are players who hit all of their shots in some game which will give a higher percentage).
Paige went 11 for 15 from the field hitting all of her free throws for a true shooting percentage of 85.7%.
Note that her second-best game, the game against Seton Hall and her third-best game the game against DePaul all had higher true shooting percentages than any of Caitlin Clark’s games.
It’s also notable that Caitlin Clark’s best game in this list isn’t even the best game for an Iowa player. Hannah Stuelke had an impressive game against Penn State hitting 17 for 20 from the field, resulting in a true shooting percentage of 80.4%.
This is not to disparage Clark’s impressive abilities, just to put it in perspective. She scores a ton of points, but she takes a lot of shots to get those points.
It’s not even obvious that a higher true shooting percentage is always better. If someone goes five for five, scores 10 points and has a true shooting percentage of 100%, that’s pretty darn good but not better than someone who scores 30 points while taking more shots.
It’s also interesting to note Juju Watkins in 10th and 11th place on this list. Both of those not quite as good in terms of true shooting percentage as Paige’s best two games but better than all four of Clark’s games.

Milestone Watch
• Aaliyah Edwards now has 973 rebounds with 7 against Providence. She now needs 34 to catch Gabby Williams in 8th place.
• Nika Mühl had 632 assists after her 7 assists in the Providence game. She is tied Renee Montgomery for fourth place. She needs only 5 more to tie Jen Rizzoti for 3rd.
• Geno now has 1206 wins.
Plus one for every assist block point rebound and steal. I don’t add extra for offensive rebounds as it already seems to favor the bigs. Minus one for every missed shot (2, 3 or foul), turnover or foul committed.
UConn 76, Providence 20.
Net positives/minutes played: Aaliyah 17/23, KK 16/34, Nika 14/34, Paige 10/22, Ashlynn 9/35, Ice 8/20, Qadence -2/17, Ines -3/15.
Deceiving- Paige dominated first half. KK coming on, last four games 1, 8, 10, 16.
Go UConn, beat providence or butler!
