 Game Analysis

Here is some info on Jackson State University if you haven't heard of them. They are a public historically black research university in Jackson, Mississippi. It is one of the largest HBCUs in the United States.

In women't basketball, they play in the Southwestern Athletic Conference or SWAC. The SWAC is a collegiate athletic conference headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, which is made up of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the Southern United States.

Jackson State cominated the women's basketball conference, going undefeated at 18-0. Similar to the Huskies, they blew through their championship tournament, winning games by an average of 18 PPG.

The Lady Tigers were 5-6 in their out of conference schedule. They won their first three games, starting out with two games at home beating LeMoyne-Owen 113-39, Tougaloo 105-47, and on the road against SE Louisiana winning 63-54.  They lost their next game against Central Florida 63-54 before winning against Puerto Rico-Mayaguez at home 80-33

They followed that with their signature win, 60-56 against Big East team St. John's.  They followed that win with losses in their final five OOC games, all against Power-5 teams. They lost to No. 14 Kansas State 79-37, Oregon State 78-58, Mississippi State 82-72, Miami 59-52,  and finally against a No. 1 seed Texas 97-52.

It's clear that they dominated in games against weaker opponents. That includes the 18 conference games.

As a team Jackson State averages 71.6 points per game. They are shooting 40.1% from the field and 28.7% on threes. They are an excellent rebounding team at 43.4 RPG. Their numbers were similar to UConn's last opponent in Georgetown, turning the ball over 15.1 times per game. They average 8.0 steals per game and 5.2 blocks per game. Perspective is how weak their schedule is.

Starting four Grad Students and one senior, they by far had more experience than their conference mates. And with two bigs and several big guards, they had height that let them dominate those games.

Their starters are Keshuna Luckett, 5'8" graduate student guard, Miya Crump, 6'1" graduate student guard, Ti'lan Boler, 6'1" senior guard, Angel Jackson a 6'6" graduate student center; and Zakiya Mahony, 5'10" graduate student guard.

Jackson State does go deep into the bench, but no more than 3-4 players in this game.  Take your pick of - Andrianna Avent a 6'0" red shirt senior, Ja'leah Hickman a  6'0" graduate guard, Laila Walker, a 6'5" sophomore center, Areyanna Hunter, 5'6" junior guard; and Hayliegh Breland, 5'7" sophomore guard.

They don't have one standout scorer. From leading scorer Avent at 12.3 PPG, they have 6 players between that and their final starter at 5.6 PPG.

Jackson State plays mostly a man-man defense. They like to put some pressure on the ball after a made basket but it's not very intense and they fall back quickly once the opponent gets past half-court. Their guards have long arms and rebound well. UConn guards will have to do a good job blocking them out.

I just couldn't watch to much of the video of the SWAC conference championship game. It actually hurt my eyes. Let's just say that Jackson State hasn't seen defense like UConn will lay on them.
Final Prediction

This game will be a typical OOC game against a weaker opponent. Jackson State has some height, but the talent level gap is huge. The Huskies have the advantage at every position. While Jackson State has more players off the bench, UConn's rotation will dominate.

The most interesting thing to me in this game will be to see how Geno rotates the "40 minute" player Ice Brady into the game. How many minutes will we see both her and Edwards on the court.

UConn by 40+.

GO UCONN!!!
