I want to apologize to my northern friends who I was mean to about the weather and my warm weather situation. Obviously God got pissed at me and made me drop the condo key in the grass on the way to the pool.

After borrowing two different neighbor's phones to call a locksmith, we eventually got back into the condo. $85 bucks poorer and a lot of deserved grief from my wife, who had told me not to walk on the grass several times.

If you ever need a locksmith in the Delray area Uptown Locksmith is the one to call. They were great!

Letting David and Rocky carry the load in this Blog while I work on the UConn/Duke pre game report worked out! Here it is!!!

Sad news from Cincinnati as the Bearcats have fired Jamelle Elliott. I have linked the article in the Courant. Hopefully she will land on her feet.

The scoring in the first two games of the NCAA tournament for UConn could not have been more different.  Against St. Francis, the Huskies took 91 shots and scored 140 points. Versus Quinnipiac, the good guys took only 44 shots and scored 71 points. The simple reason for this incredible disparity is the offensive pace of the opponent. St. Francis ran and ran, then shot quickly, while Quinnipiac held the ball and shot as the shot clock ran down to 0.

There is nothing UConn can do to make teams they play shoot sooner. All the Huskies can do is play their smothering defense and limit the QUALITY of the shots opponents take. They did just that in both games. St. Francis only made 22.2% of their shots, while Quinnipiac was only slightly better at 30.4%. Interestingly, the point totals were close at 52 and 46 for the bad guys. The combined defensive stats for UConn were quite good for the two games. Consider:

1. Opponents missed 102 of their 137 shots. That is only 25.5%.
2. UConn had 82 defensive rebounds. The bad guys only grabbed 17 offensive boards.
3. The Huskies blocked 10 shots and created 25 turnovers.
4. The 3 point shot defense was particularly great with opponents making only 14 of 81 tries. (17.3%)
5. In the two games, UConn only committed 21 fouls and gave up 14 made free throws.

So, two different teams tried two very different strategies to defeat UConn and neither worked.  In the end, a loss is a loss and the point difference only matters to fans. Win and advance..!!

Go Huskies..!!

"Good Lessons. We'll Learn From This."

Yes, it's the Coach Joanne P. McCallie Bus Tour!

She of curious resume' and habits. She is the first NCAA coach to win 4 titles in 4 different conferences and she is undoubtedly someone who talks a good coach talk of game analysis. But some say, and I'm one of them, that behind the glittering smile and jewelry that a very high Duke salary bought lurks a "monster".

All hell broke loose at Duke in 2015 over allegations of abuse and a hostile "work" environment for players under "Coach P." after years of rumors of same and "me no speaky" transfers out of the program. Duke AA Elizabeth Williams blew the whistle, loudly, on Coach P after she graduated. An "investigation" led to an announcement that Coach P would remain at Duke, but it was made clear that certain controls and monitors would be put in place.  I would have loved to listen in on that discussion by the Committee: "There are years and years of this! If we fire her it will all come out!! So this is what we'll do - essentially nothing!!! Brilliant!!!!."

After investigation, Joanne P. McCallie to remain Duke women’s basketball coach

We can't be too hard on her, because her behavior gave us Z, who let it slip that the atmosphere at Duke was pretty poisonous and it was draining to play with people who didn't want to be there.

Does she have coaching ability? Yes, but mediocre and not the greatest at in game recognition and adjustment; zone defense is pretty much all she teaches. And it is never the Queen's duty to share blame for a loss. Her favorite expressions, eerily mimicking Holly Warlick: "We'll learn from this." and "Good lessons for us in this game." Her pressers are shorter now as she can no longer excoriate her team; but look at this presser and tell me what goes on behind close doors has changed. Focus particularly on Oderah Chidom (a Z classmate).

But every once and a while the real Coach P peeks through the curtain. After a 6 point loss this season to U of M she sarcastically observed "rebounds are good , yeah, they got 12 offensive rebounds, we got 8 (pause), yeah rebounds are good".

Her Twitter faux pas are legendary. She started her attack on Geno for accepting Z there, then ramped it up. But, editorial constraints mean I'll just leave you with this article on that subject.

Duke Coach Blast Geno

Geno's classic rejoinder. She should "try a little harder": We'll she if she can this weekend. ESPN Sat. 1:30 Eastern
