UConn Women Win AAC Championship

Ho hum, another season another conference championship. This one was not as easy as last year. South Florida actually put up a battle and UConn looked like a team that had just played three games in three days with a few injured players. The shots weren't falling including several layups.

But Geno knows and we all should know by now, Championships are won with DEFENSE. And UConn had plenty of that in this game.

While UConn didn't press in this game, their half court pressure defense let by the quickest hands in WCBB, Gabby Williams, absolutely shut down USF in the 2nd and 3rd quarters, putting the game away.

Azura Steven, UConn's sixth man, won the MOP for the AAC Tourney. Yes, a player from off the bench won that award. Amazing.

I'm so happy for these players, but they know that the work is just starting. The time off will be so helpful for this banged up first unit. And they will work on fine turning the offense. But defense will rule the day if and when UConn gets to the Final Four.

My only comment on the Cincinnati game is to note they scored 21 points and so did Azura. Z did it in 28 minutes and it took Cincinnati 40 minutes. 8-)

Going into the USF game, the leading scorer for the Huskies is Napheesa with 481 points. Katie Lou is right behind at 471 points. The leading rebounder is Z at 235, but Collier is only 1 rebound off at 234. Pheesa also leads the team in made free throws with 66 and made field goals with 198. She is 2nd in blocked shots (56) and steals (52). To top it off, she just went over 100 assists against Cincinnati and has 101 for the season. For all the talk of an off year, she sure is killing the opposition..!! ;)

Gabby Williams leads the team in assists with 156. However, she only played 16 minutes against Tulane and didn't dress versus Cincinnati. So what happened to all those assists she would have handed out in those two games? Well, Napheesa had 10 assists in her time during those two games. Once again a player steps up and fills the void. :D  For the season, Pheesa now has 101 assists & is the 4th UConn player to go over 100 assists.... ;)

Some strange stats from last night. UConn scored 75 points on 65 shots and had 55 rebounds. UConn also had 5 steals and 5 fouls & grabbed 15 offensive rebounds and shot 15% from 3 range in the first half. For Cincinnati, each of the 5 starters had one basket for a total of 5 hoops. Weird...

Go Huskies..!!
