I have a link in the UConn section on this, but the top international player in the class of 2018, Ezi Macbegor, has decided to come to America to play college ball and the two teams she is considering are UCLA and UConn.
The 6'4" Macbegor is one heck of a player. Great post moves, runs the court well, and her best asset is her defensive skills. Her shot blocking ability is Stokes-like.
The late signing period for 2018 ends on April 17 so expect to hear before that where she is going.
I've been reading all the reasons from both UConn and UCLA fans where she should go. The UCLA fans like to focus on Sunny California, the better education and the short trip from California to Australia (14 hours) compared to UConn to Australia (23 hours).
Now, on the first part, the area of Australia where she is from is much more like Connecticut than LA. And it's kinda silly to think that weather would be the deciding factor. It's not even a top 10 factor in my opinion.
Better education? Yes, UCLA is ranked higher than UConn in the evaluation sites. But UConn is a top 20 public school in the country and #56 (US Report) in the nation. That is not chopped liver. And if she was going to an American college for the education, she would have more options. She is looking for a BASKETBALL education. No place better for that than UConn.
The travel? I think that concern is just above the weather, but not a difference maker.
I'm feeling really good on this possibility. If it happens, the class of Williams, Nelson-Ododa and MacBegor will rival the Stewart, Jefferson and Tuck class.
