Here is my UConn/South Florida Post Game Report

And here are the video highlights.

******************************************************************************

That second offensive foul on Stewart was such a bad call. Horrible. I found this video on YouTube highlighting the play with slow motion.

It's pretty clear to me how badly the official missed this call. Form your own opinion. What do you think?

Like I said last night when I saw all the lower top 25 upsets, there would be some new teams or old teams back in the top 25.

Louisville, Miami, USC and Florida all entered the top 25.

Now, I won't get into the other three teams but the jump of Florida to No. 20 with 134 points from being at the bottom of "getting votes" with 3 is just crazy.

It's the same reason that Tennessee lost to Florida and dropped only one spot from 12 to 13. Tennessee still gets more respect than they have earned on the court because of the history of the program. It's been going on for years now.

And beating Tennessee gets you more respect than you have earned.

From David in Naples

Normally, it is easier to make a basket if you are closer to the rim. Against UConn, USF did the opposite. From outside the 3 pt arc, they shot 12-26 or 46%. Inside the arc, closer to the basket, shooters were 9-39 or 23%. USF was twice as accurate from farther away..!!

Kitija Laksa, the Latvian freshman, was 5-7 from three point range. That's 71%..!  Inside the arc, she was 1-7 or 14%. Weird.  Courtney Williams shot 50% from three (4-8), but only 6-17 or 35% from closer in. The most extreme example was Ferreira, #20, who was 2-5 from three range and 0-5 from inside the arc.

Credit UConn for taking away the lane and contesting closer in shots. Credit USF for taking what they were given and making 46% of their long range bombs.

This isn't numbers but David hits the mark with his look at the South Florida game.

Just my opinion, but this was a benchmark win for UConn this season. Here's why:

1. With 49 seconds left in the 3rd period, UConn was clinging to a 6 pt lead. USF was hanging tough. Moriah, who had just 2 points so far in the game, swishes a 3 with 29 seconds left, to raise the lead to 9. Laska, the Latvian Assassin, tries a 3 with seconds to go in the period, which Stewie blocks into the 4th row. Clutch shooting from a cold player, Stewie being Stewie.
2. Using momentum from the strong finish, UConn makes 3 consecutive threes from MoJeff, Morgan and Katie Lou to open the 4th period. Gabby, Stewie and Tuck assist on the baskets. The defense holds USF to 0-3 on their shots and Stewie blocks another shot. Clutch shooting from 3 different players, all assisted by different players. Defense clamping down. Lead up to 18.
3. With 4:46 to play, UConn extends their lead to 21 points. USF uses 3 straight three pt baskets off a missed shot and turnover to cut the lead to 12. UConn responds with two 3s by Kia Nurse on assists by Mo and Morgan. Defense shuts down USF on 0-5 shooting. Lead back to 18, game over.
4. In the last 3:40 of the game, UConn holds USF scoreless until a basket with 26 seconds left in the game. Defense plays superb when they had to..!

Summary of late game heroics:
3 point baskets by MoJeff (2), Morgan (1), KLS (2) and Nurse (2). Great balanced scoring.
6 assists in the 4th period by five different players.
Defense shutdowns of 0-3 and 0-5 holds USF to 15 points in the 4th period.
Stewie does not score in the 4th period, UConn extends lead to 21 pts.

Geno must be pleased with how the team responded to critical shots, defensive challenges and Stewie triple teamed. Great win.

 From my friend Itnpseeker -

Is it me or is the AAC pretty much in Big East-mode? Many of the BE teams decided their only shot to beat UConn was to beat on UConn, and they had to prove that they were not 'afraid' of UConn. The way to do that was to manhandle our best. Many (most) of those games were brawls with a low percentage of hard fouls being assessed against the opponents, and I believe we are witnessing the phenomena again.

When I'd watch any of these teams in their next few games, they rarely played with the physicality that they brought against UConn, not even the storied Muffin teams when she recruited from the WWF, played the same way against other opponents. I think I heard the the Bruise Sisters served the other team tea alnd biscuits at the half...or maybe not.

History repeating itself, perhaps.

  1. Stewie has position deep in the paint, her man is beat. The defender knows this and is flopping as soon as Mo delivers the ball. It is so obvious I don't know how the ref missed it.

    1. Totally agree Tina. Refs get caught up in the environment.
