DoggyDaddy's Dailies 1/24/16

******************************************************************************

Just a few observations from UConn's 90-37 win over SMU before I publish my Post Game Report.

15 points 12 rebounds, 9 blocks, 7 assists. Crazy good line by Stewart.

Did you see the attempted stuff by Stewart? ESPN VIDEO LINK She did her "run from the foul line and offensive rebound" thing and actually tried to jam in the rebound. It was so cool to see. She was clearly short on her attempt but managed to grab the rim. It was something you never see in WCBB. I'm sure I'll find a video of it to share if you haven't seen it.

Geno on what would be his reaction to the dunk if Stewart completed it? "That's cool, now run back on defense and make another play". Gotta love that guy!

Another great game by the Huskies. You never know how a team will react to missing a key player. We now know a lot more about this team. Players WILL step up and that is really bad news for WCBB. This UConn team is actually getting better.

55 and counting!!!

23 games cancelled Saturday due to the big storm. Crazy!!!

I watched the Baylor/Iowa State game and boy, is Coach Mulkey fun to watch. There was one time when a ISU player looked to be going out of bounds with the ball and a Baylor player got called for the foul. The histrionics that Mulkey went through were hysterical. And the players on the bench couldn't help but laugh at her. When Mulkey turned to the bench with an exasperated look, the players tried to stifle their grins, but they failed. Too funny!

Baylor won the game 77-61 behind a terrific effort by Khadijiah Cave who scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Iowa State was behind by 11 at the half, but hit consecutive threes to close to 39-34 early in the 3rd quarter. But Baylor was too tough for OSU, who is a pretty slow team. It's hard for them to get off clean shots.

I'm not overly impressed so far with two of the posts that Tennessee missed out on, Beatrice Mompremier and Kalani Brown. Mompremier has her moments and starts, but she doesn't get a lot of minutes averaging 14 mpg. And Brown gets a little less. I do understand that freshman posts take time and these two are no exception. But Mulkey is a good coach and they will get better.

From David in Naples

Napheesa Collier is listed on the roster as 6'1", certainly not the tallest player on the team. However, after the SMU game, she now has 29 blocked shots, 2nd only to Stewie.

Her 29 blocked shots are 22 more than 6'2" Morgan Tuck and 20 more than 5'11" Gabby Williams (who jumps like 6'4"). Katie Lou has 2 blocks for the season despite being 6'3". Even 6'5" Natalie Butler, who has appeared in 8 games, has fewer blocks even if the minutes played are pro-rated.

Collier has more blocked shots than Tuck, Gabby, Butler and KLS combined by 29 to 26. What an incredible talent. Can you say Kiah Jr...??  ;)

Deshields blocks a shot in the Tennessee/Vanderbilt game. Players rush over and chest bumps. Deshields give a stare down to the player she blocked. Her body language was "look at me".

Stewart blocks a shot in the UConn/SMU game. Couple of players give a quiet low five and Stewart immediately is talking about who is covering her and calls out "five" for the defense.

See the difference?

  1. Great issue, DD!

On the issue of 'fronting', when a player goes through the poses and stares, leaving the hand in the air after a three, etc., it, in my mind, makes a strong statement about what is important to her-making sure you know how good she is. SC does a whole lot of this, and Tenn (DD) does a fair amount of this.

What is most important? Is it the team? Winning as a team? The player's ego that isn't so sure how good she really is, so has to make sure everyone noticed that she made a good play?

I'm not being being old-school or uptight. It's a matter of not understanding how coaches who get paid well (very), don't understand how being distracted enough to make sure people notice you, will keep a very good player from being great.
