This is a great example for why using comparative scores as any kind of indicator is just, well, dumb.
No. 9 Ohio State handled No. 6 Maryland 80-71 in the Xfinity Center. Not a good home loss for the Terps. They were undefeated in the Big Ten last year including the tournament and now have one loss in one game, a home game to boot.
Kelsey Mitchell was terrific for the last three quarters scoring 26 of her 27 points over the last 30 minutes. Ohio State's front court was up to the task, playing more than equal with the tough Maryland bigs. Shayla Cooper had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. She added 7 assists before fouling out. Sophomore Alexa Hart scored 20 points on 10-12 shooting. They held Bronna Jones to 10 points and 9 rebounds.
So, comparative scores?
UConn over Ohio State by 44
Ohio State over Maryland by 9
UConn over Maryland by 10
Enough said.
Here is a good article from the Maryland beat writer Thomas Kendziora. I really enjoy his work.

AAC's second best team, No. 20 South Florida, squeaked out a win against East Carolina 61-59 at the Minges Coliseum, Greenville, North Carolina.
USF was led by Courtney Williams with 20 points and a 14 point 14 rebounds double-double by Alisia Jenkins. Both teams really struggled from the field shooting with both teams shooting 37% and around 27% on threes.
ECU really needed this win. They drop to 6-8 while South Florida jumps to 8-3 and more than likely preserving their spot in the top 20 after a loss to No. 8 Mississippi earlier in the week.
From David in Naples
UConn has some very predictable, great statistics. There are also, however, some head scratchers. For example:1. Kia Nurse shooting 65% from the free throw stripe while Gabby is at 72%.
2. MoJeff with 31 turnovers in 11 games vs 62 all last season. (Only 6 in last 3 games)
3. UConn averaging more points per game this year, than last year (89.5 vs 89.3), despite losing KML.
4. Napheesa Collier starting more games (4) than Samuelson and Butler combined (1).
5. Katie Lou shooting 81.3% from free throws, but only 25.5% from three pt arc.
6. Collier with more blocked shots (14) than Gabby and Morgan Tuck combined (13).
7. Stewie leading the team in 3 pt shooting at 47%. (Nurse at 37% and MoJeff at 35%)
After only 11 games, strange stats are common. By season end, many of these odd numbers will disappear.

Back in the day of me posting a lot on messages boards (pre-blog days), I would have a good battle at times with a friend from out west. We didn't always agree and when we didn't it would always end with him getting mad....lol. What can I say, I'm not always easy to get along with.
I read a post by him where we really would have gotten into it.
"I could see starters of Saniya, Kia, KLS, Morgan and Natalie, but you also could replace KLS with Napheesa or Gabby depending on who Geno wants to use as a starter. Bench of Dangerfield, Bent, Irwin, Williams, Collier and Ekmark."
First of all, I believe Lawlor will be back, so it's kind of insulting to leave her off the list of bench players.
He went on to say -
"No disrespect to the rest of the team, but that is as weak a bench as UCONN has had in a very long time. I think in big games Geno could go with as little as 7 depending on how fast Crystle catches on but I'd expect Gabby and the other bench player (Collier or KLS) to get lots of PT as well. If Courtney continues to work on her game and actually gets her 3 point shot back, I could see her earning some time at the 2G spot, but she needs to up the quickness and lateral movement on defense. I have very low expectations for Bent and Irwin as freshmen but perhaps they will surprise me!! I sure hope so!"
I actually agree with some of what he said. Gabby and/or Collier/KLS will get a ton of playing time next season. That's where my agreement ends.
Let's talk about the freshman. He is basing his assessment of those players strictly on their rankings. I know because he hasn't seen any of these players. As we all now, especially with a coaching staff as good as UConn's that even lower ranked players can contribute. These two are supposed to be exactly the type of players Geno looks for. Hard working, great basketball instincts, team leaders. Both Bent and Irwin fit the bill. I agree we don't know how many minutes they will, but low expectations?
Courtney actually get's her three point shot back? Does he realize she is shooting 44.4%? Looks back to me. His comment on quickness and lateral movement is old. That was the comment last season. She is in much better shape and that has improved both of those issues.
His weak comment about Dangerfield was shocking to me. The third rated recruit might not be in the regular rotation of players? She will get as many minutes as this years freshman, close to 20 mph. Talk about underestimating someone. Wow.
As for his first comment "as weak a bench as any in a long time"? Maybe he is talking about after the first 7 as the bench? But the bench is usually everyone not starting. If that is the case, he is so wrong.
Let's compare the first players off the bench. As least who I think will fit that bill. For the sake of this discussion, I'll have next years starters being Nurse, Chong, Butler, Tuck and Collier. No particular reason.
2016-17 - Williams (JR), Samuelson (SO), Dangerfield (FR), Ekmark (JR)
2015-16 - Williams (SO), Butler (SO), Samuelson (FR), Chong (JR), Ekmark (SO)
2014-15 - Stokes (SR), Chong (SO), Ekmark (FR)
2013-14 - Stokes (JR), Chong (FR), Banks (JR)
2012-13 - Tuck (FR), Jefferson (FR), Doty (SR), Stokes (SO)
2011-12 - KML (FR), Stokes (FR), Banks (FR)
2010-11 - Dixon (SR)
Now that I have seen the benches, it makes his statement even more ludicrous. Next year's bench will be better than 2010-11, 2011-12, 2013-14 and 2014-15. 2015-16 was better with Butler coming back from injury. The only other one close is the 2012-13 bench, but they were led by two freshman.
It doesn't take long to look these things up instead of just guessing and stating it as fact. He should try it sometime.
