Doggydaddy's Dailies 1/14/16

******************************************************************************

UConn put the hammer to Memphis Wednesday, giving UConn fans a dinner show performance. At least for the first quarter. The rest of the game was like a fire drill. There were moments of great play, but it looked like a tired team that used all their adrenaline in the first 10 minutes.

More to come in the Post Game report. But I will add that Samuelson was terrific in this game and even earned a second half start. We will see if that is a change that Geno is making for future games.

Oh yeah, they won 86-46.

I just noticed that Geno is sporting new glasses with the NIKE logo on the side. Must be nice to get paid for doing that!

A very nice Notre Dame fan (I know, an oxymoron) posted this on another board. Really interesting stuff.

1. Mercedes Russell, Tennessee
2. Kaela Davis, Georgia Tech (now South Carolina)
3. Diamond DeShields, North Carolina (now Tennessee)
4. Taya Reimer, Notre Dame
5. Linnae Harper, Kentucky (now Ohio State)
6. Rebecca Greenwell, Duke
7. Allisha Gray, North Carolina (now South Carolina)
8. Jannah Tucker, Tennessee (now Villanova)
9. Tyler Scaife, Rutgers
10. Oderah Chidom, Duke
11. Erica McCall, Stanford
12. Kendall Cooper, Duke
13. Ronni Williams, Florida
14. Jessica Washington, North Carolina (now Kansas)
15. Lexie Brown, Maryland (now Duke)

Seven transfers out of the top 15 plus Reimer, who is inactive due to personal reasons but remains enrolled at ND and Cooper, who is not enrolled at Duke for spring semester but is eligible to return in the fall.

Of the players who have stayed at their original school and active:

Russell is ok but a disappointment for a HS POY (11.2 ppg, 8.5 rpg)
Greenwell has been good but is bottled up by good opponents because Duke can’t make teams pay for face-guarding her.
Scaife has been solid (17.3 ppg so far this year on over 50% shooting).
Chidom has been rather mediocre (7.9 ppg, 6.2 rpg this year)
McCall is solid (13.1 ppg, 9.5 rpg)
Williams is solid (10.4 ppg, 7.5 rpg).

Three years on we’re at six contributors for their original team, at least two of which (Chidom, Russell) have to be considered significant disappointments.

On the other hand:

25. Lindsay Allen, Notre Dame (9.1 ppg, 5.4 apg, 4.3 rpg, 2.3 A/TO ratio)
26. Kelsey Plum, Washington (27.3 ppg, 4.1 apg, 3.9 rpg)
27. Adriene Motley, Miami (15.9 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 2.9 apg, 50.2 FG%, 40.8 3FG%)
28. Alaina Coates, South Carolina (12.9 ppg, 9.3 rpg, 1.7 bpg, 69.6 FG%)
43. Shatori Walker-Kimbrough, Maryland (17.8 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 3.3 apg, 2.1 spg, 54.8 FG%, 57.7 3FG%)
52. Nina Davis, Baylor (16.6 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 2.4 apg, 1.3 spg, 57.3 FG%)
55. Brionna Jones, Maryland (14.4 ppg, 9.1 rpg, 69.1 FG%)
69. Ally Disterhoft, Iowa (16.7 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 3.1 apg, 53.4 FG%, 36.2 3FG%)
74. Jessica January, DePaul (13.6 ppg, 6.0 apg, 4.9 rpg 2.4 a/to ratio)
80. Sydney Wiese, Oregon State (injured now but career 13.5 ppg, 4.8 apg, 3.5 rpg, 1.67 a/to ratio)
85. Brittany Brown, Florida State (10.4 rpg, 4.7 apg, 3.4 spg, 1.9 a/to ratio)
92. Alexis Peterson, Syracuse (14.9 ppg, 5.6 apg, 3.4 rpg, 2.9 spg, 2.4 a/to ratio)

There definitely have been some players who were great gets for their programs but they mostly came between after 25 in the rankings.

There are always players who over or underperform compared to their rankings, of course, but the top end of 2013 looks bad compared to 2012 (Stewart, Jefferson, Loyd, Tuck in top six) and 2014 (A. Wilson, B. Turner, Canada, K. Mitchell, Nared, G. Williams among top 15)

No. 4 Texas won again, staying undefeated, beating Kansas 75-38. I'm getting more and more impressed with the Longhorns. If you can win championships with great defense, Texas has a shot. Imani Boyette does a great job protecting the paint and the rest of the Texas team has bought into their defensive schemes. They have only given up over 60 points three times this year.

Looking forward to the Texas/Baylor game. No doubt that will be for the Big 12 regular season championship.

Look for the game Sunday afternoon at 3:30 on ESPN2. It should be a good one!!

One more top twenty five team was upset Wednesday. No. 18 Michigan State lost on the road to Indiana . They not only lost but they were never in the game. The final was 81-67. Indiana jumped out to a 15-2 lead and MSU never got closer than 10 points.

Indiana came into this game at 9-7 and 1-3 in the conference. This is a bad loss for Spartans.

From David in Naples

UConn has scored the most points in the 3rd period of their 14 games so far this year. The Huskies 331 points comes out to 23.6 pts per 3rd period. At that rate, UConn would average over 94 pts per game. The 1st and 4th periods are basically tied for the next best scoring period at 314 and 312 points. By far, the lowest scoring period for UConn is the 2nd, at 272 points.

The good news is that opponents also score their fewest points in the 2nd period with 170 pts. However, opponents only score 174 pts in the 3rd period when UConn is scoring the most (331). The difference between what UConn scores in the 3rd period vs opponents comes out to an average of 11.2 pts per game. If you want to beat UConn, you better be ready to win the 3rd period. It would probably be a good idea to score more in the other periods was well. 8-)

The great three point shooting by UConn's opponents is making me crazy. Now, I'm ok when great shooting players hit their threes. They are supposed to. But this Memphis game was something else.

Mooriah Rowser  and Ariel Hern were on fire from deep.

Coming into this game Rower was 10-43 for 23% and Hern was 29-97 for 29%.  So, of course, Rower goes 2-3 and Hern goes 2-2.

Bah!

So, here is a great post - "IMO This is the first game since her injury that Mo looks back up to full speed and comfort. She's putting on a show."

Really? well, it's only the second game since her injury. This guy makes it seem like it's been several games...dummy.
