DoggyDaddy's Dailies 1/22/16

******************************************************************************

Here is my UConn/Central Florida Post Game Report.

And my UConn/SMU Pre Game Report

******************************************************************************

Things are tough in Knoxville. And the press is not holding back.

Lady Vols are Backsliding

"The Lady Vols haven't reached a Final Four or produced an Associated Press first-team or second-team All-American since Candace Parker led them to consecutive championships in 2007 and 2008."

So, how did Tennessee do Thursday night in their quest to stem the tide of criticism coming from the Lady Vol faithful and news media? Mixed results.

They beat Vanderbilt at home 58-49 behind the resurgence of freshman T'ia Cooper. Cooper scored 13 points on 6-12 shooting, 1-1 on threes. She did have 1 assist and 3 turnovers, not exactly what you want from your point guard. And make no mistake, this is her team. Just ask Warlick, who told her that after a timeout.

Tennessee also played some terrific defense, forcing Vanderbilt into tough shots and out of their comfort level.

Ok....that is all the good news. So, did Tennessee turn the corner with this win? Doubtful.

While Cooper was great in the second half, the rest of the team was not so good. They fouled too much, especially in the fourth quarter, allowing Vanderbilt to close a 14 point deficit to three. This game could have really gotten away from Tennessee but Vanderbilt made two unforced TO's to allow Tennessee to build up the lead at the foul line.

But DoggyDaddy.......Tennessee beat a 13-4 tough ACC team in Vanderbilt. Didn't they?

Well, let's take a closer look at the Commodores. In their first three games, they lost by 25 to Dayton and two to Green Bay. They then went on a ten game winning streak. Impressive you say?

They played the likes of Presbyterian, Austin Peay, Ohio, Air Force, Drexel, East Tennessee State, Troy, Tennessee-Martin, New Mexico State, and Fordham.

Their best win of the 13 was against Ohio. OHIO. Not Ohio State. Now, Ohio is a very good MAC team. But please, it's the MAC.

I think I'll reserve judgment on Tennessee until after their next game. At No. 9 Kentucky. But this win should keep them in the top twenty for now. At least they have that going for them.

******************************************************************************

Well, maybe it won't be that big a test for Tennessee on Monday against Kentucky. The Wildcats just
lost 73-65 to a pretty mediocre Ole Miss team. Not a good effort by a top ten team. Lousy, in fact.

One of Kentucky's starting guards, Janee Thompson, rolled her ankle late in the game. Hopefully she will be able to go on Monday. It looked pretty bad.

******************************************************************************

In possibly the worst first half ever, Georgia had a 17-14 lead over No. 10 Mississippi State. No, not the first quarter, the first half.

Mississippi had 8 turnovers, 1-2 from the line, 1-11 on threes and 5-22 from the field for 14 points.

Georgia had 9 turnovers, 2-2 from the line, 1-6 on threes and 7-25 from the field for 17 points.

The rest of the game was not that much better. The final score in an upset was Georgia 47 Mississippi State 43. Both teams shot in the mid 30's, Mississippi State was 2-20 on threes. A total of 38 turnovers were not offset by the 19 assists.

Another horrid SEC game by a top 25 team.

******************************************************************************

On the opposite side of the spectrum, No. 7 Ohio State held on to beat Michigan 97-93.

Ohio State shot 56% from the field, 54% on threes, 73% on FT's, 15 assists and 13 turnovers.
Michigan shot 53% from the field, 42% on threes, 85% on FT's, 22 assists and 18 turnovers.

So, the questions are, does the SEC teams play such incredible defense that no one can score more than 70 points? Or do the SEC offenses suck that badly that no one can score more than 70 points?

And do the Big Ten teams play that bad a defense that anyone can score 90 points? Or are the offenses that good that they can have games like this?

Inquiring minds want to know!!

From David in Naples

Last year, UConn settled on a starting line up after the 2nd game and stayed with that group the rest of the season. Four players appeared in all 39 games, with Moriah and Stewie starting every one.

This year, in just 17 games, Geno has started 8 different players in 7 different combinations. The original group of last year's 4 returning starters plus Gabby gave way to the original 4 plus Napheesa. One game injuries to Stewie, MoJeff and Tuck tweaked the line up with Saniya and Louuuuu getting starts. Then Katie Lou replaced Napheesa and now Morgan is out 2 weeks. Gabby will most likely start in her place along with Louuuu. At least until Geno changes things again... 8-)

The only player to play in and start all 17 games is Kia Nurse. Stewie and MoJeff have started the 16 games when they weren't hurt and Morgan did the same for 15 games. Both Gabby and Collier now have 8 starts and Louuu now has 3. Saniya has pinch hit in 2 games.

Interestingly, last night's lineup, which may be repeated for the near future, has 2 seniors, 2 sophomores and 1 freshman. Very young for a 3 time National Champion. ;)

IF you can believe it, on one message board they are still talking about Doris Burke talking about Tennessee's problems with the 2016 recruiting class. Wasn't that game Monday?

Here is the latest genius going on about how Burke was out of line and Staley was right to tweet about how it was not cool for Burke to be doing that.

This is what Dawn said: "To Listen to the commentators speak about Tenn and its recruiting class is disturbing. "
IMO Dawn saw Doris' comments as a public airing of a taboo subject (recruiting misses)=dirty laundry within her profession. No one of the profession should be commenting on recruiting misses. Doris is of the profession called WCBB and should have done better. Within this profession, when a prized recruit signs you congratulate the winner and you move on to the next recruiting battle. What Doris did was publicly chastise the looser of a recruiting battle over and over=#Not Cool.

"No one of the profession should be commenting on recruiting misses."

Huh?? Recruiting issues is a taboo subject? Since when? Its' dirty laundry? Huh??

Now I can understand that coaches shouldn't comment on other coaches issues. But Burke is a TV broadcaster. It wasn't just the fact that Tennessee missed on two posts, as she said. They have NO recruits for 2016. That is BIG news for a program as storied as Tennessee. Not to mention they WHIFFED on all the posts in the 2015 class as well. Burke went easy on them.

Is this fan suggesting that Doris should congratulate Baylor for getting Cox? And not mention Tennessee at all? Because she is "of the profession?

What the ???? that is just really really dumb.
