Well, this really sucks. Evina Westbrook's waiver request to play for UConn this season was denied by the NCAA. UConn is appealing the decision. If UConn files their appeal by Tuesday they expect an answer from the NCAA in a week or so.
As you all probably know, Westbrook transferred from Tennessee to UConn after last season ended and UConn put in a waiver request in October so she would be able to play.
Recently Geno was confident that she would be eligible saying just last week - “I feel good about it. Everything I read the last couple years it’s [about] ‘student-athlete welfare.’ … So I would like to assume that something like this is pretty important.”.
However, the NCAA, without giving any reason, denied the request. This is on seriously screwed up system. More comments from Geno -
"If one of my players went through what Evina went through I think there would be an investigation. I'm disappointed because I don't agree with how this system works. With all the issues going on in the NCAA, this is what we're going to do? We're going to sit around in a room and arbitrarily decide who's worthy and who's not? Then they wonder why there's an uproar over how the NCAA is operates. I don't think there is anything spiteful coming from Tennessee. I just think they could have been a little more helpful and they chose not to be."
He seems really pissed off and I don't blame him. Sounds like it was a terrible experience for Westbrook at Tennessee. And Geno was a little diplomatic with his last statement. Nothing spiteful? Doubtful.
The UConn AD had plenty to say about it considering that Tennessee did not oppose the waiver.

“I was surprised for many reasons but mostly because the NCAA talks to us about serving the best interest of the student. It recognizes that there are situations in which a student shouldn’t have to sit out a year. It tells us what those are and what is required to prove it. And then you provide that – without opposition from the prior school – and you get denied. We have to do better. We, as member schools, need to demand that we do better. Thankfully, the process allows for an appeal if necessary. We plan to utilize that process until she’s either appropriately allowed to fully participate or they tell us there’s nothing else that can be done. "
Geno on the waiver denial
The waiver appeal is looked at by college Athletic Directors and not NCAA people so I'm guardingly optimistic.
