You have to take the good with the bad so even though I LOVE having the grandkids sleep over on Saturday night, I am paying for it by catching their cold. I'm tired and miserable so I will be brief. No player by player analysis.

Interesting game for the Huskies Wednesday night at Vanderbilt. It was a definite improvement over the first game against California. After a slow early start, UConn was steady in pushing their to 5 points after one quarter, 10 points after two and despite a late quarter meltdown, they had a 19 point lead after three quarters and looked to be totally out of gas in the final quarter. It was clearly because of the short bench and extended minutes by the 6 player rotation. Geno has to find a way to give these kids a blow using the back end of the bench.

The good news was the production of the freshmen in this game. They didn't score much. Makurat had no points and Griffin had 4, but they really contributed in other ways. Makurat added 5 assists and 2 steals while Griffin added 5 rebounds and 4 steals. Nice.

Walker is showing that she is going to be a star this year as she scored 25 points and added 8 rebounds and 2 steals. And what can I say about Olivia Nelson-Ododa, who had another double double with 14 points, 12 rebounds and she added 4 assists and 5 blocks. One of those blocks was slapped off the backboard. You just don't see that much in the women's game.

UConn's defense was excellent in this game holding Vanderbilt to 13, 10 and 11 points in the first three quarters before allowing 17 in the final quarter.

It's clear the offense still has a way to go, but there are some talented offensive players for the Huskies and more practice and game time will iron out some of those kinks. That being said, we all might have to lower our expectations this year against a very difficult schedule.

Overall a good win on the road for UConn. They play Temple on Sunday. I hope to be up to a pregame report before then.

I have been watching all my sisters sign, in what seems like forever, but to finally do it myself felt unreal. Officially a husky😭💙🐺

Of course there is never good news without bad news.

Evina Westbrook's waiver and appeal were denied by the NCAA. She will sit out the 2019-20 season.

This really sucks. But it is what it is.

By David in Naples!!!!!

Today is Haley Gorecki's birthday.
Haley plays basketball for the Duke women's team.
She plays and plays and plays.
In fact, today she is 23 years old. Twenty. three. years. old.
Rumor is she has used 5 of her 8 years of eligibility. 8-)

And.......

UConn beat California in their opening game by a score of 72-61 and Husky fans had a collective heart attack about the offense. Only 72 points, almost all scored by only 4 players. I don't remember everyone getting the vapors last season when the team scored 72 or fewer points in 10 different games. Some people are hard to please...
