Highlights from last years matchup
12/8/18 UConn 99 SHU 61

UConn played Seton Hall in 2018. Video above. As part of the Big East, UConn played them early and often. In the late 70's and early 80's prior to Geno coming on board, Seton Hall won the first 6 games they played. The last time that Seton Hall won was in 1994 and since then UConn has won the last 30 times these two teams have met.

Seton Hall

Seton Hall is coming off a split of a pair of games at the 2019 Junkanoo Jam in Bimini, The Bahamas.  Most recently, the Pirates edged Vanderbilt, 69-65, in the third-place game of the Junkanoo Jam's Junkanoo Division. Senior Alexis Lewis was named to the All-Tournament Team after scoring a game-high 24 against Vandy.

UCONN

The Huskies come into this game at 6-0 on the season and is coming off a great game against Dayton, even without their point guard Crystal Dangerfield out with back spasms. Geno was very happy about the effort against the Flyers. This game is the final  game of a 3 game road trip that ends in New Jersey.

Anthony Bozzella returned to his alma mater as the head women's basketball coach prior to the 2013-14 season. In six years at the helm, Bozzella has turned the program around completely and reached the postseason five times with two NCAA Tournament appearances. He holds the best winning percentage in modern program history by a wide margin and has built a program that figures to compete for the top spot in the BIG EAST year-in and year-out.

In his six-year tenure at Seton Hall, Bozzella holds an overall record of 114-80. During his 27-year head coaching career his record sits at 420-398.

 Game Analysis

Like I did for last season's analysis, I'm mostly going by box scores and roster info for this analysis. I looked for a current game replay but no luck. Not even highlights. We will see how accurate this turns out.

Seton Hall is a small team that looks to rely on quickness on defense to trigger their offense and once in an offensive set, look to find an open three point shot. There, how's that for box score and roster analysis?!!

They have started 4 players regular starters so far this season. 5'10 junior Desiree Elmore, who is from Hartford, is the leading scorer at 16 ppg. She also leads in rebounding at 8.4 per game. She is one tough player. The second leading scorer is 5'10" senior Alexis Lewis, a transfer from Iona. She has been a big part of the Pirate offense. The height on this team is 6' junior forward Selena Philoxy out of Brooklyn NY. She is averaging 7.9 rebounds per game. The two guards, senior Barbara Johnson and freshman Lauren Park-Lane are 5'8" and 5'6". As you can see, they are small. But tough!

The bench has been going only 2 deep lately. Shadeen Samuels has been out the last 4 games after starting the first four games. I haven't heard if she will be back for this game. She has a hamstring injury, always tough to come back from. They are also hoping that Femi Funeus, a 6'2" sophomore can come back from her injury last season. She is close to returning.

Last season Seton Hall was a high scoring teamshoot around 30 three pointers every game and hit a very nice percentage of 37%.  This year, not so much. Their scoring is down and they have to rely on their defense. Like last season they like to turn defense into offense. They steal the ball 10 times per game.

UConn has a tremendous size advantage in this game and will look to use it. The Pirates have no one to match up with any of the front court players in 6'5" Nelson-Ododa and  6'1" Walker. They will post up and kick back out when Seton Halls doubles down low, and they will have to do that in order to stop easy inside buckets. When the Hall presses, UConn has the players to break it. Yes, the Huskies will occasionally turn it over, but with Dangerfield and Williams controlling the ball and Walker and Nelson-Ododa giving them big targets, UConn should score off the press more than they turn it over.

We don't know if Dangerfield will be available in this game. Without her, my guess is Molly Bent steps in the staring lineup again. And all she has to do is move the ball around, take the occasional open shot, put on defensive pressure and stay away from turnovers. Easy right?

Final Prediction

With or without Dangerfield, UConn is significantly better than Seton Hall. I expect UConn to get plenty of turnovers. And plenty of defensive rebounds off misses. They will turn that into points by running as much as possible. It's been a while between games and historically, UConn starts out slow when that happens. And with Dangerfield iffy, this is as tough call to make.

I'll say UConn by 25+.
