Here is my UConn/South Florida Post Game Report
*****************************************************************************
Here are the finalists for the Dawn Staley award. From their web site:
The Dawn Staley award is given to the most outstanding collegiate guard in the country; a player who exemplifies the skills that Dawn possessed during her career (ball handling, scoring, her ability to distribute the basketball and her will to win).
2015 Dawn Staley Award Finalists
Brittany Hrynko, DePaul
Jewel Loyd, Notre Dame
Kelsey Mitchell, Ohio State
Tiffany Mitchell, South Carolina
A great list of guards that are all deserved of being on the list and winning the award. I know that many UConn fans will be going nuts over the exclusion of Moriah Jefferson, the point guard for the Huskies. And I will say, I do think Jefferson is as good as any guard on that list and maybe at this time, better than some.
We could do some stat hunting and see if that was why these four were picked over Jefferson.
Here are what I believe are the most important stats for a guard.
Moriah Jefferson
MPG 27.1, FG% .581, 3PT% .500, PPG 12, APG 4.8, 159/52 a/to, 88 stls
Brittany Hrynko
MPG 29.3, FG% .448, 3PT% .365, PPG 19.9, APG 5.1, 166/94 a/to, 83 stls
Jewel Loyd
MPG 31.4, FG% .466, 3PT% .333, PPG 20.5, APG 3.1, 102/83 a/to, 51 stls
Kelsey Mitchell
MPG 37.3, FG% .416, 3PT% .382, PPG 25, APG 4.1, 136/137 a/to, 56 stls
Tiffany Mitchell
MPG 29.4, FG% .505, 3PT% .430, PPG 14.4, APG 2.7, 85/67 a/to, 60 stls
"ball handling, scoring, her ability to distribute the basketball and her will to win"
Ball Handling - I don't think anyone an watch these 5 players and tell me that Jefferson isn't the best ball handler.
Scoring - Jefferson is below everyone on this list. But she has by far taken many fewer shots. Just look at the field goal percentage and tell me that Jefferson couldn't score 20 ppg of that was needed.
Ability to distribute the ball - Only Hrynko has more assists but look at the turnovers. It's not even close and the low turnovers just add to point one - ball handling.
Will to win - Ok....this one has me stumped. Who is the PG on the best team in the country? Come on....lets get serious here.
So, what was their criteria?
Ok....now I'm convinced. They really screwed up for not having Jefferson in the final four. I'd go as far as to say they are idiots. Morons. Yes, now I'm mad.
My friend JD thought that it was geared to shooting guards, but the description doesn't really show that. But he said one thing that was right (yeah only one), that this is only the 2nd year of this award. And that it's the Lieberman Award that really means something.

FUN WITH NUMBERS!! |
Stat of the Day
By David From Naples
UConn finished the regular season and AAC tournament with a record of 32-1.
In those games, UConn played stifling defense and scored w/ a balanced offense. How good was UConn? Consider:
In 33 games this so far season, UConn has given up 1,573 total points. That is an average of 47.7 per game.
In just the 1st half of those games, UConn has scored 1,573 total points. Great defense matched w/ great offense.
By contrast, Notre Dame gave up 1,965 pts to opponents this year. They scored 1,355 in their 1st halfs.
South Carolina gave up 1,682 pts to opponents, but scored only 1,174 in the 1st half.

More tickets punched to the dance!
DePaul defeated No. 24 Seton Hall 78-68 to win the Big East tournament and the automatic NCAA tournament bid. Great win for DePaul. Seton Hall should still get an At Large bid.
South Dakota State wins 6th Summit League title and a place in the NCAA tournament beating South Dakota, 72-57. This is the sixth title for SDS in seven years.
BYU beat San Francisco 76-65 on Tuesday to win the West Coast Conference tournament and the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Princeton clinched it's automatic bid a while ago with the best record in the Ivy League. It's the only conference without a tournament. They beat Pennsylvania 55-42 to finish the season 30-0 and 14-0 in the Ivy League. It wasn't against the best competition, but they have earned a decent seed in the NCAA's.

Ugly Game Of The Day
I'm retiring this with the conference tournament winding down and the NCAA's starting in 10 days. It was fun poking fun at a team or two every night and I meant no disrespect to the players on those teams. I know how hard they all work and how difficult it is to play this game well.
But the UGGY will be back next season so LOOK OUT!!!!
