GO HUSKIES!!!!!

I made a few changes with the NCAA tournament coming up. Hope you like them. Still have my opinion pieces and UConn links. I added links to anything going on in WCBB. I added the scores from all the conference tournaments and any I'll point out any automatic bid winners.

Once the NCAA tournament starts, I'll have the brackets listed and scored posted as they happen. So any time you check the blog, you will see updates.

Hope this all works out...it's all new to me!!!!

UConn assistant coach Shea Ralph was on hand for Mater Dei's Open Division quarterfinal win. UConn recruit Katie Lou Samuelson finished with a career high and school record 42 points in the 99 to 67 win. Lou also had 10 rebounds and 9 assists. UConn is getting an amazing player.

And speaking of amazing players, Incarnate Word rolled to a 73-38 win on Tuesday (3/10) moving them into their state quarterfinals behind the play of Katie Lou's future teammate Napheesa Collier.
Collier had 31 points and 16 rebounds in three quarters of play. She was 14-14 from the foul line.

UConn has had great groups of teammates over the years. Moore and Charles come to mind. Dolson and Hartley are another great duo. The last 3 years we have been treated to a fantastic trio in KML, Jefferson and Stewart. Samuelson and Collier are amazing. Add in De'Janae Boykin and they will be right there with any of them when it's all said and done.

Moriah Jefferson was included on the list of finalist for the Nancy Lieberman award, named after maybe the best point guard ever in WCBB (Sorry Sue).

After the snub by the Dawn Staley award, it was nice to see her recognized for the more prestigious award.

2015 Finalists
Moriah Jefferson - UConn
Lindsay Allen - Notre Dame
Kelsey Mitchell - Ohio St.
Niya Johnson - Baylor
Samantha Logic - Iowa

All great players and a tough choice for the voters. Let me help them.

They should eliminate Mitchell right off the bat. This is an award for a point guard. Lieberman wasn't called the Lady Magic for her scoring, although she averaged 18 ppg for her career. Mitchell is a great player and a great scorer. But she had a 1/1 assists to turnover ratio.

Now, does that mean that Johnson should be the winner? I mean, she averaged the more assists with 8.6 per game than any of the other finalists. And had a remarkable 276 assists and 76 turnovers with a  3.6/1 assists/TO ratio. But ya gotta score more than the 7.2 ppg that she does. And her 43% fg shooting is something to consider. Lastly, she is 0-4 on threes......for the season.

Logic is a great candidate. She is right behind Johnson at 7.9 apg. And she averages 13.4 ppg, great numbers when you put them with the assists. She has 245 assists and 121 turnovers. That is a lot of turnovers. Her assist/TO is a decent 2/1. A 48.5% shooter, she is weak on threes at only 35%.

I have seen Allen a lot this year and she is just a terrific point guards. She is a little light in the scoring averging 9.9 ppg. Her 5.2 apg is terrific. She has 170 assists and 82 turnovers. She has a similar Assists/TO ratio to Logic, at 2/1. She shoots a terrific 54% from the field. And 37.5% on threes.

Jefferson has terrific numbers across the board. She averages 12 ppg, 4.8 apg, has 159 assists and only 52 turnovers. Her A/TO ratio is 3/1. Her shooting percentages are 58% from the field and 50% on 3's.

If I had to put them in order I'd have them like this:

Jefferson
Allen
Logic
Johnson
Mitchell

Someone contact those voters. I saved them a bunch of time.

Jewel Loyd was named Player of the Year by a panel of "experts" at ESPN. Now, I like Voepel, Smith and Hayes. They are really knowledgeable folks. But, the way they went about this all year made it seem predetermined that Loyd would win this award. You'd have to be deaf or dumb to miss the constant pushing of the "Loyd for POY" mantra the announcers made at every opportunity.

That being said, Jewel is a terrific player and well deserved of any awards she gets. And I would bet there are more coming her way. But the "In-season performance trumped preseason hype." comments really hit me the wrong way. Yes, Stewart was last years winner of this award and the winner of a few others, Naismith and AP. Thus the hype. It felt like they were holding her to a different and higher standard. And that doesn't seem entirely fair to me.

Stewart has really poured it on the last 10 games. Averaging 30 minutes, she is scoring over 20.4 points, grabbing 9.1 rebounds, 3 assists, 3.7 blocks. She shot 54.4% from the field.

Loyd, in 34 minutes, has averaging 18.6 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists. She shot 38.8% from the field.

Looks to me that one of the two is playing better and one is playing worse going into the NCAA's.

It's not a big deal. Stewart will pick up her fair share. The reality is the ESPN award is a second tier award compared to the Naismith, AP, Wade and Wooden awards. I'm sure Stewart will get one of those.  It was just the typical ESPN "look at us" bullshit that gets tiring after 20 years.

FUN WITH NUMBERS!!
AUTHORED BY DAVID IN NAPLES

David chimes in with his own numbers on the Loyd/Stewart debate.

Jewell Loyd is a great basketball player. Her job is to score points.
1. Notre Dame NEEDS Loyd to score. She has taken 504 shots this season. TWICE the next player's shots.
2. Loyd has led N.D. in scoring 22 times this season. The rest of the team led in scoring 11 times.
3. She averages 31.4 minutes per game on the court. She takes more than 15 shots per game.

Stewie is a better player than Loyd. Her role on UConn is do many more things than just score.
1. Stewie has taken 420 shots, the next player, KML, has taken 327. Tuck has taken 322.
2. Stewie led UConn in scoring 11 times. The rest of the team led 22 times.
3. Stewie averages 27.5 minutes per game. She takes 12.7 shots per game.
4. Both Loyd and Stewie have 102 assists. Stewie has many more rebounds, many more blocks and even more steals.
5. Stewie has fewer turnovers, as well....

Congrats to Loyd...! But, we'll keep Stewie..
