What a great day for UConn with four members of the AAC All-Conference 1st team, defensive player of the year, 6th player award, most improved player, and two members of the freshman team. UConn dominated during the season and it was certainly reflected in the hardware they brought home. More awards on Friday.

It's such a fun time of year when the conference tournaments really kick into high gear. The ACC and SEC have Top 25 teams playing. Too many games to write about so I'll focus on top 25 teams and teams that might make the NCAA tourney.

ACC Tourney

In the first ACC game of the day, Wake Forest defeated No. 22 Syracuse 85-79, closing out the game with free throws after Syracuse closed the gap with some good pressure defense and a few three pointers.  Syracuse came into this game on a four game winning streak, but that was done against BC, Pitt, VT and Clemson, not exactly murderers row. Maybe they came in a little overconfident. Wake Forest (13-19) gets to live another day while Syracuse has to wait to see where they play in NCAA tournament. They are fortunate this games will only impact their seeding and not their overall slot. I want to add that I miss watching Quentin Hillsman on the sidelines. The Syracuse coach is a show all by himself worth watching. He didn't disappoint with a technical being called in the second half. Dawn Staley doesn't hold a candle to Hillsman's language on the sideline. I could distinctly read his lips when he said "What the f(ck are your doing?" to one of his players. And his new beard and Malcom X tie is great!

In another ACC tourney game, Miami helped their case for the NCAA tourney with a 62-52 win over Virginia. This victory pushed Miami to 19-11 and 8-8 in the conference. With their earlier win over Notre Dame, I like their chances. Virginia ended up the season 17-13 with a likely invitation to the NIT. Now they get to play a much improved Notre Dame team, who recently moved up to the No. 2 AP and Coaches poll ranking. The first time these two teams met, Notre Dame was in the middle of the Reimer situation where she was going to leave the program and then took it back. For fans of "The Nanny", you know that is not a good thing. Also Miami had a really hot shooting night the last game they played. I'm thinking this won't end well for Miami.

No. 15 North Carolina improved to 24-7 (10-6) with an 84-64 blowout of Georgia Tech. UNC is a fun team to watch. They have a few players in Gray, Cherry, Washington and Coleman who all can make threes and they have range out to what seems to be NBA range. In typical Hatchell team style, they have no conscious. Their other big strength is Stephanie Mavunga, who was a beast in this game with 23 points 16 rebounds and 8 blocks. If they play like this, they can win the ACC tourney and do some damage in the NCAA's. Their problem is they are really inconsistent and are just as likely to put up a stinker in their next game. Which happens to be against #10 Louisville. Should be a good one.

SEC

In the first SEC tourney game of the day, Arkansas helped their case for the NCAA tourney with a 72-61 win over Ole Miss. According to Creme, the Razorbacks were on the bubble before this game. They might need one more win to ensure a slot in the field of 64. Arkansas scored 11 straight points to take a 14 point lead with 9 minutes left. Ole Miss close it to 8 points but could never get any closer. The Rebels might get an NIT bid to continue their season. Arkansas gets to play against South Carolina so that second win in the SEC tourney is unlikely as is a bid to the NCAA.

No. 18 Texas A&M took care of business against Auburn in their first game without their starting point guard, Jordan Jones. Curtyce Knox did ok in her debut in the starting lineup with 6 points and 5 assists, but she also had 5 turnovers. As usual, it was the solid A&M defense that allowed them to leave with the win. They will be taking on LSU in the quarterfinals on Friday.

Vanderbilt No. 12 Kentucky

Big Ten

My home state team, Rutgers, beat Indiana 62-53 today in the Big Ten opener. Now 22-8, if RU can get to the Big Ten final, they can grab a good seed in the NCAA Tourney. I'll be rooting for them if/until they meet Maryland. Then I'll root for the Terps to grab a #1 seed in the NCAA so Tennessee can be a #2 in Albany. I have a ticket!!!!

Ugly Game Of The Day

Florida International has had what you would call and UGGY season. They lost Thursday to Middle Tennessee State 79-30 to go to 3-25 on the season and 0-17 in Conference USA play. They have one more regular season game remaining to complete a perfect conference losing season.

In this game, they only scored 30 points, their worst scoring effort of the season. They shot 23% from the field, 13% on threes (1-8), only 5 assists and an astounding 28 turnovers.

Congrats Golden Panthers for an outstanding UGGY award winning effort!!!
