Katie Lou Samuelson was named a finalist for the Anne Meyer Drysdale Award for the best shooting guard in the country. I have a good feeling about this one. She has my vote...if I had one!

UConn/South Florida II Post Game Report

A tough season ending loss for Olivia Nelson-Ododa on Tuesday. Winder-Barrow lost its state quarterfinal 68-67 in overtime to #1 ranked LoveJoy.
Nelson-Ododa fouled out late in overtime but not before putting up 24 points, 19 rebounds, 10 blocks, 3 assists.

Coming soon to Storrs!!

No word yet about Baylor's point guard Australian Kristy Wallace knee injury. I am hoping it's a sprain and she can return later in the season. But my brain tells me she will miss the rest of the season.

She is SO important to the fortunes of this Baylor squad and a much as her shooting, passing and ball handling skills are a big part of Baylor's offense, her on the court emotional leadership carries more weight.

Her on the court replacement is a freshman. A talented freshman, but a freshman non-the-less.

Part I

Senior Night was a big success with Gabby & Kia being honored and UConn smashing USF to finish the regular season 29-0. Several numbers stood out from the 82-53 victory.

1. Katie Lou and Napheesa lead the team in scoring, but scored "only" 21 combined points. No matter, Azura and Gabby scored a combined 39 points. The scoring balance is amazing.

2. Kitija Laksa, who leads USF in scoring, took 19 shots and made only 5. She scored 2 points in the first half when UConn put USF away with a 24 point lead. UConn is definitely in Laksa's head.

3. Gabby leads the Huskies with 152  assists. She had 9 last night. She also leads the team with 222 rebounds. How many times is the leading rebounder also the main assist person?  Can't think of one other...

4. UConn created 19 turnovers vs USF and held them to 21 baskets. USF missed 42 shots.

5. Azura went 4-4 from the free throw line and now leads the team with an 82.6% accuracy rate. Katei Lou is next at 81.9% and Kia is 3rd at 81.8%.

6. UConn's starting five plus Z scored the following baskets = 3, 3, 4, 5, 7, and 8. Balance...

7. This was the 10th time UConn has been undefeated in the regular season. The Huskies are 86-0 in AAC regular season games.

Next game is March 4th, on Sunday in the AAC tournament.

Go Huskies..!!

Part II

Why does the USF coach play his starters so many minutes? Last night, his 4 best players were on the court for 40, 40, 38 and 37 minutes. With UConn leading by 35 points and 4 minutes left to play, Geno cleared the bench. Not Jose, the USF coach. He leaves in his starting five and tries to make the score closer than it was. This quote after the game is telling.

"Because we are judged against UConn, people don't always look at how UConn does against Louisville, Notre Dame, UCLA and Texas. I don't like how our program is judged nationally that way. Look at our losses. We lost by 10 to Notre Dame, we were up in the fourth quarter against Oklahoma, that's the only thing that bothers me."

Seriously Jose..?  You were down 35 to UConn and your starters scored the last 6 points to make the final margin 29 points. I hope Geno runs up the score in the AAC tournament if the two teams meet. Serves you right... >:D
