UConn 59 UCF 52
Well, that was Deja Vu....wasn't it? So similar to the Memphis game. As I said, it would be similar with the difference being that UCF is a better team than Memphis. They showed it in this game.
This was only the second game in 125 conference outings that UConn did not win by double digit poinst. It did take a really dumb foul on a three point shooter with ten seconds left to create that final margin. However, it was only the death of a thousand cuts that made it even this close. The Knights just kept up that physical pressure defense, and closed the gap even though the game was NEVER in jeopardy.
This game was both a poor offensive outing for the Huskies and a terrific defensive outing for UCF. Even though I despise how they play and can't stand their coach, a woman of many faces, all them them show her disgust with her players and the refs, I have to give them plenty of credit. They committed 24 fouls and not all of them at the end of the game. They fouled all game long, and that 24 could have easily 34. It was that physical.
When you have a game played at that tempo it's truly difficult to get into any flow. I can tell you I have never seen a UConn team have back to back clock shot violations. Geno has to be besides himself.
As bad as UConn's offense was in this game, their defense was that good. Holding UCF to 3 second quarter points was the difference in the game. UCF is offensively challenged, but UConn's own pressure defense made them even worse.
No need to go into any more details of the game. UConn has turned into the gang that couldn't shoot straight and they need to break out of their slump before the Tennessee game. I still have a ton of faith in this team going into the Tulsa game.

Now, just imagine us both wearing a huskies jersey and competing everyday at practice 🙈🤩🐺 https://t.co/VBD0MhReLj— Paige Bueckers (@paigebueckers1) January 16, 2020

It's just not the same to pick apart other teams for their play when UConn was so pickable themselves in their game. However, I'll muddle on and pick away.
Tennessee, UConn's opponent in one week handled Florida with ease winning 78-50 behind Rennia Davis, who scored 18 points. My confidence in beating Tennessee like a drum has plummeted however, this game against Florida is not a good indicator of Tennessee's prowess. Florida is just a horrible team losing to Mississippi State 93-47, and to Kentucky 65-45 before this 28 point loss to Tennessee.
We have a possible super-uggy going on. North Dakota State has only scored 20 points after three quarters against No. 25 South Dakota. I'll keep an eye on this one. The stats have to be Uggy material.
On edit, North Dakota State blew my dreams of an all time Uggy away with a big 16 point fourth quarter for a 36 point total. The numbers of 25% from the field and 21% on threes could qualify them for the award, and they did have 22 turnovers. But I just can't do it to them. Call me soft in my old age, but NDS? You are off the hook.

Underrated Northwestern was able to outscore No. 15 Indiana 21-11 in the fourth quarter to force overtime. Indiana had a 5 point lead with 1:13 left in the game and let Northwestern score the final 5 points to tie the game. Indiana was looking to put the game away in overtime, taking a 69-65 lead with 2 minutes left in the game. But just like the fourth quarter, the Wildcats scored the last 6 points of the game to win 71-69 to upset the Hoosiers. Crazy game.

Guess I should be happy I couldn't watch the game since Frontier dropped SNY. ESPN3 blacked out.
ReplyDeleteyou didn't miss much. But at least it was a win.
DeleteYour quote “ When you have a game played at that tempo it's truly difficult to get into any flow.” was interesting. Remember when we used to say that when we played Villanova and Rutgers back in the old Big East days?. Tough then, just as tough today.
