UConn vs SMU
Pregame Info

I looked for my pregame reports from last years games against SMU and discovered I didn't write any!! Looking at the stats for SMU, I know why. They are terrible. But I'll give you some into now so you won't watch this game blind.

Notice I went old school for the UConn logo.

The game is Sunday at 4:00 on SNY/ESPN3. The Huskies are visiting the Mustangs in Dallas. I wish I was visiting my sister. I could go to the game!

Last season, UConn and SMU played in Storrs and UConn beat SMU 79-39 behind 22 points from Collier and 21 points from Samuelson.  It could have been worse but the Huskies only scored 8 points in the fourth quarter when Geno played the bench. Whenever I look back at these games I'm always a little shocked to see how poorly Olivia Nelson-Ododa played last season in many games. In this one she was scoreless with 1 rebound and 1 assists. She did have 3 blocks. And she only played 10 minutes.

Highlights from Last Years Game

Alica Froling, their leading scorer in this game has graduated and she gave SMU some size at 6'3". They still have some returning height, but when I share the stats, you will understand why this is such a bad team.

- They only have 1 double digit scorer in Johnasia Cash with 10.8 per game. And she is the leading rebounder at 9.6.
- Cash has fouled out of three games.
- They shoot 36.3% from the field. No, not on three pointers. OVERALL.
- They shoot 19.8% on threes. Their best three point shooter is JaQuia White, who is 10-26 (38.5). But she only takes a little over 2 per game. Take away her 3 point shooting and the rest of the team is 13-90. - That deserves a season long UGGY!
- They have 160 assists and 224 turnovers.

And these stats have been accumulated against a pretty weak schedule. They did only lose to TCU by only one point. TCU just beat No. 25 Texas. That's about it. The rest of the schedule is weak. Bad stats against weak teams? A recipe for a big blowout.

Geno was happy with Christyn Williams and Crystal Dangerfield in the last game. I'm sure he reminded them of the slow start against WSU and the slow start in the fourth quarter of that game as well. I have a feeling UConn will come out on fire.

Analysis of the game? Not necessary. Just expect a big win by the Huskies.

Prediction? UConn by 45+. Somewhere in the 90-40 range.

After SMU, UConn has  their first big test when big bad No. 6 Baylor heads into town for an ESPN Thursday matchup.

The Bears are coming off a 77-56 win over Oklahoma, a team UConn just beat by a 97-54 margin. Of course that doesn't mean anything.

Baylor was lead by Tennessee/South Carolin transfer T'ea Cooper with 32 points in her 39 minutes. I was going to pick on them for playing their starters so many minutes until I looked at the UConn/Oklahoma box score. So......never mind.

Looking forward to seeing how good this Huskie team really is.

Everyone knows Geno Auriemma's winning percentage is spectacular. It is widely reported that his winning percentage is the best among Division I women's basketball coaches. Of course, as is true of many records, there is a minimum hurdle — in this case, the NCAA only counts coaches with five or more years of experience. He attained that distinction relatively recently. For many years, Leon Barmore's .869 winning percentage was the gold standard which Geno surpassed a few years ago.

You probably never wondered what the results would be if you drop the five year requirement, but now you get to know.

Auriemma is in fifth place if you don't restrict the number of games.

Tied for first place is Annie Troyan of Penn State. In 2004 – 05, Renée Portland was head coach at Penn State and Annie Troyan was an assistant coach. The NCAA credits three victories in that year to her. I haven't yet tracked down why this happened, and I've even looked through the Penn State media guide. Does anyone know how she amassed her 3–0 lifetime record? As I think we know, it isn't simply that Portland was indisposed. We know that Chris Daily has stepped into the head-coaching duties in 10 separate occasions, but the NCAA credits those to Geno.

Tied with Troyan is J.L. Arthur of Western Kentucky. I have no idea what happened, but apparently he (she) gets credit for one victory in the 1914 – 15 year. That's long before the NCAA even existed so I wonder if it's a database glitch.

Amy Tucker's claim to fame is a little more substantial. Many of you know her as the long time assistant to Tara VanDerveer. Some of you may even recall that Tara decided to take the head-coaching duties of the USA basketball senior team very seriously, and took a year off from her head-coaching duties at Stanford. While she was away, Tucker took over the reins, and finished with a record of 29 and 3 for a winning percentage of .906.

In fourth place is Trevor Woodruff. Woodruff was head coach of Division III Scranton for four years. In those four years his teams had a record of 114 – 10 for a winning percentage of .919. He is now in his second year at Bucknell. He is 8-4 so far, and while his cumulative winning percentage (.896) exceeds Auriemma's, I suspect that will soon change.

Image result for stats don't lie

By David in Naples!!!!

One of the most enjoyable parts of the UConn victory over Wichita State was the last 4:46 of the game. Why the last 4:46 of the game, you ask? Well, UConn held the Corn Fritters scoreless and went on a 15-0 run. During that last part of the game, UConn played with two freshman (Anna & Aubrey) and without their best player, Megan.  Here are the highlights:

1. WSU misses a shot because Olivia blocked it.
2. WSU misses three shots, Liv gets two rebounds.
3. WSU turnover.
4. WSU misses a lay up because Aubrey blocked it.
5. WSU turnover, Anna steal.
6. WSU turnover, Aubrey steal.
7. WSU two missed free throws.

UConn's defense, with two freshman, held WSU 0-5 with 3 turnovers and 2 blocked shots in the last 4:46 of the game. That is just quality defense..!!
