Well, what a strange game. UConn was certainly off in this game. But then again, at times they were on. Then off. Then on. Strange game.

It certainly was a game of runs.

WSU started the game with an 10-2 run, then UConn followed that up with a 26-2 run.

UConn ended the third quarter on an 11-3 run, then to start the fourth quarter WSU went on a 14-2 run to start the fourth quarter and then UConn finished the game on a 20-2 run.

Strange game.

The team  that fouls the least in the entire country had their best player, Megan Walker become the first player to foul out of a game and she still scored 21 points.

Strange game.

I'll attribute this to UConn only playing for the second time in 16 days. That is a really long time not to have more than one game. And I have a feeling these officials haven't reffed a game in that long as well. They were just awful.

When Walker went out with her fifth foul, it was 63-51 UConn with around 6 minutes left. I was wondering how the team would respond and who would pick up the slack for Megan. Well, I was waiting for a breakout game for Christyn Williams, and while it wasn't the entire game, she had 10 points in those final minutes. I am hoping this will give her some confidence. I loved her aggressive moves to the basket forcing the issue.

Seven more blocks for Nelson-Ododa. She is clearly on her way to break the UConn single season record.

And one more thing. As Geno says, UConn will go as far as Dangerfield will take them. She was awesome in this game and that would mean they will go a long way!!!

Game Highlights

*****************************************************

Tennessee opened it's SEC schedule with a 77-66 win over 3-11 Missouri. The Tigers are really a bad team. They have now lost 5 games in a row and 7 of their last 8. That included a 68-33 loss to Princeton. Winning by 11 over a team as bad as Missouri is not a great game for the Lady Vols, but a win is a win I suppose.

Notre Dame won!!!! They went into Pittsburgh and beat a now 3-10 Panther team 60-52. The Irish were desperate for a win and they got it behind returning forward Mikayla Vaughn's 17 points, 9 rebounds and 2 blocks. I'm sure they are thrilled to have her back. Her starting has Destinee Walker coming off the bench and she scored 16 points in this game. Ok, they only scored 60 points, but a win is a win I suppose. Hey, didn't I just say that??

I can't wait for the video highlights on this game. Syracuse beat No. 8 and previously unbeaten Florida State 90-89 in overtime. Florida State's Kiah Gillespie makes a really touch inside shot with 0.8 secs left 89-88 FSU and then Syracuse gets the ball in the frontcourt, inbounds to Engsler who makes a layup with 0.0 left on the clock. WOW!

From Phil

Everyone's heard of the AP top 25, and many of you have heard me talk about the Massey rankings. I thought it would be interesting to see how the two compare. I put together a spreadsheet that can be found at:

docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Jpu9xDjzozqVpunm1lgE2izosbTNzrbDBNnAqkZMKCg/edit?usp=sharing

You should be able to follow this discussion without looking at the spreadsheet. I listed the top 45 teams according to Massey along the left column, and then plotted how that ranking compared to the AP rating.

The green diagonal represents where the Massey ranking in the AP ranking match. Interestingly, there are only two such examples. Both agree that UConn is number one. Both agree that South Carolina is number four. None of the others match, although some are close.

Any point above the diagonal means that Massey ranks the team higher than the AP voters. There are eight such examples. Three aren't worth talking about very much — in the case of Florida State, DePaul, and Arizona, the two systems are within one or two spots from each other. For all practical purposes, the two systems treat the teams the same.

In four of the five other cases, the Massey rankings are higher than the AP rankings, curiously all by exactly four spots.
BaylorUCLA
Mississippi State
and Gonzaga
are each placed four spots higher in Massey than in the AP.

The major outlier is Northwestern. Massey has them as the number 15 team in the nation, while the AP ranking has them at number 31. Arguably, this is a little unfair, because I'm comparing the post Maryland win Massey result to the pre-Maryland win AP result, but Northwestern was ranked number 20 prior to the win, so it was still a large disparity.

Below the diagonal are teams that Massey feels are ranked too high in the AP rankings.
Again, several are quite close, so not too much should be made of the difference.
Oregon
Louisville
Missouri State
Oregon State
and West Virginia
differ by one or two spots.

NC State and Kentucky differ by three and four spots respectively.

Stanford is a more substantial difference, with the AP ranking them at number five and Massey at number 10.

Texas A&M is more substantial with an AP ranking at number 11 and a Massey ranking of 18.

Maryland even more so, with an AP ranking of 12 and a Massey ranking of 20 (although as noted let's see what happens after the AP voting, which may move Maryland down a few spots)

However, the biggest differences are Miami and Tennessee. Those two teams are ranked consecutively at number 23 and 22 respectively in the AP ranking. Massey also agrees they deserve to be ranked close to each other, but has them at number 43 and number 44 respectively.

I think it may be worth looking at this again later in the year and seeing whether the rankings come together, and to what extent the movement is by Massey or the AP ranking.

Image result for stats don't lie

By David in Naples!!!!

UConn led Wichita State 45-26 at the half. The game is a study in contrast. For example, the Huskies have 1 personal foul, Wichita has 12. As a result, UConn is 10-13 from the charity stripe and WSU is 0-0.

Consider:

1. WSU scored 10 of the first 11 points. UConn then outscored the Shockers 21-2.
2. Christyn is 1-7, Crystal is 7-9.
3. UConn has 24 rebounds, WSU has 12.
4. The Huskies have 12 assists, Wichita has 5.
5. Crystal has 19 points, four WSU starters have 11 combined.
6. WSU is 4-7 or 57% from beyond the arc & 33% inside it.

The 2nd half was interesting for the Huskies..!!

Boy that was a weird game. Wichita State opened the 4th quarter outscoring UConn 14-2. Then UConn scores 20 of the next 22 points. It got weirder.

1. WSU had 23 fouls, UConn only 14. But Megan fouled out with 5 fouls.
2. Olivia blocked 7 shots, WSU only 2.
3. UConn missed 8 free throws, WSU made 8.
4. Kyla started and took 1 shot & had 1 rebound.
5. WSU had 0 free throw tries in the 1st half and 11 in the 2nd.
6. Christyn led the team with 6 assists and 8 rebounds.

Go Huskies..!!
